Solar Panels Ignite on Industrial Road

Firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the roof without major damage.

Officials are investigating the cause of a solar panel fire on the roof of an Industrial Road building Wednesday.

Shortly after 3 p.m., the Monmouth Junction Fire Department responded to the 200 block of Ridge Road after a passerby reported black smoke coming from a building. Fire Chief Scott Smith and patrol officers arrived at 1 Industrial Road to find a a section of solar panels ablaze.

Nearly 40 firefighters responded to the scene from the Monmouth Junction, Kendall Park, Kingston, Jamesburg, Plainsboro and North Brunswick Fire Departments. 

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the solar panels, with the roof suffering minor damage.

The Brookview and Old Bridge Fire Companies from East Brunswick covered for the South Brunswick fire stations as they fought the blaze.

South Brunswick EMS and the Kendall Park First Aid Squad also responded to the scene, but there were no injuries suffered. All units cleared the scene by about 5:30 p.m.

The blaze remains under investigation by the South Brunswick Fire Safety Bureau.
