"Top 10 Exercises that Can Lead to Injury"

It can often be intimidating walking into a crowded gym with big, bulky machines being used by people who look like professional weightlifters.  You may be going to the gym every week – several times a week – to attend classes, lift weights, run on the treadmill, etc.  You’ve made commitments to start getting into shape and to increase your physical fitness to the next level, and all you know is that developing an exercise regimen can help you get there.  But, one thing you may not be aware of is that you could be setting yourself up for an injury.

Lifting weights has many benefits – weight loss, a boost in metabolism, increased muscle tone and strength, increased bone density, and greater performance.  Athletes, younger and older individuals, patients, bodybuilders, etc., all go to the gym to use the different equipment that work essential muscles such as the quads, hamstrings, rotator cuff, and abdominals.   Lifting weights can be a challenging workout in which one typically feels the “burn” by the end of 30 repetitions.

However, incorrect form and poor technique when lifting weights can do more harm than good.  Whether you are setting up the machine incorrectly, lifting too much weight, performing too many repetitions, using incorrect posture and body mechanics, or taking inadequate rest breaks – these poor habits can lead to injury.  Possible injuries include: tendonitis, strains or sprains, torn ligaments, torn tendons, and other types of structural damage.  Your whole exercise regimen could be more detrimental to you and you may not even be aware of it.

Join us on October 14th, 2013 at 7pm at the Kendall Park Office to discuss the top 10 exercises that commonly lead to injury, and the proper form and body mechanics to use for different machines and weightlifting exercises.  The exercises that will be discussed are common exercises performed in a gym setting (e.g. Bench press, leg extensions, leg press, abdominal exercises, squats, etc.).  Whether you have started exercising and/or lifting, or plan to start soon, come attend the session to hear about the “do’s and don’ts” in a gym setting.  All ages are welcome!
