UPDATE: Monroe Man Suffers Broken Leg After Being Hit by Car on Route 535

Wednesday, Feb. 27 1:30 p.m.

A pedestrian hit by a car on Route 535 Tuesday evening suffered a broken leg in the collision after crossing the roadway against the traffic signal, police said.

The victim, a 41-year-old Monroe man, was struck by a car at 7:50 p.m. as he was crossing Route 535.

Police said the man had missed his bus stop for the Park & Ride on Route 130 and got off the bus near the New Jersey Turnpike. The man began to run back towards Route 130 where his car was located. As he was crossing Route 535 adjacent to the Courtyard Marriott, the man was struck by a 2003 Chevy Impala, which driven by a 27-year-old South River man who was headed north on Route 535.

The victim was treated at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick before being released.

Investigators determined that the pedestrian ran into the roadway against the traffic signal when he was hit by the car. No charges have been filed at this time.

Tuesday, Feb. 26 8:45 p.m.

For the second time in less than a week, a pedestrian walking across a major roadway was struck by a motorist in South Brunswick.

On Tuesday evening at about 7:50 p.m., a male victim was crossing Route 535 from the direction of the NJ Turnpike towards the Courtyard Marriott when he was hit by a Chevy Impala, according to police.

The victim was rushed to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, with no details about his condition immediately available.

Police said the victim was unable to communicate after first responders arrived at the scene.

No additional information about the victim or the driver of the Impala was immediately released by police, as investigators were still working at the scene of the accident as of 8:30 p.m.

One lane of Route 32 east was closed until about 8:45 p.m.

This was the second incident in South Brunswick where a pedestrian was struck in the last five days.

On Feb. 21, a 44-year-old New York man was attempting to cross the northbound lane of Route 1 near Deans Lane when he was struck by a 2012 Nissan driven by a 60-year-old Staten Island man.

Police said Wilson Estracio, 44, of Corning, N.Y., was wearing all dark clothing at the time of the accident. The driver attempted to swerve out of the way, but was unable to avoid hitting Estracio, according to police.
