Ali Yildiz finished third in New Jersey at the state wrestling championships in Atlantic City on Sunday, with his only loss to the eventual state champion.
South Brunswick High School senior Ali Yildiz became the third Vikings wrestler in school history to finish third in the state championships. Yildiz, the Region V Champion at 182-pounds, suffered one loss over the weekend in Atlantic City to eventual state champion Johnny Sebastian, of Bergen Catholic, who won by a score of 19-7 in the semi-finals. Yildiz would rebound from that loss with a pinfall victory over Brad Schawrze, of New Egypt, in the consolation round Sunday. Yildiz opened the tournament with a 7-3 tiebreaker win over Glenn Cross, of Matawan, and also recorded pinfall victories over Verona's Frank Greco and Jordan Fox, of St. Peter's Prep, over the weekend. The Vikings' other wrestler to make states, 152-pound Regional …

Yildiz was pushed to the limit, but outlasted Isaiah Soto of Bound Brook with a 4-3 overtime victory in the finals. Senior 152-pounder Jordan Pagano came up just short of a title at districts last weekend with a third-place finish, but would not be denied on Saturday. Pagano defeated of Josh Ugalde of Bound Brook 3-1 in overtime to capture a Region V Championship. Top five ranked Ali Yildiz and Jordan Pagano lead the South Brunswick High School team into districts as the road to Atlantic City for the state championships begins.
This season has been one of transition for the South Brunswick High School wrestling team. New head coach Bobby Januska took over the reigns of the program from the legendary Joe Dougherty this year, after the long time coach stepped down in 2012 after amassing a school record 305 wins. Januska, who spent six seasons as an assistant at SBHS after coming over from North Brunswick, has the Vikings sitting at 16-13 as the District 20 Tournament begins this weekend. "The transition has been really smooth and that's a credit to the kids," Januska said. "Coach Dougherty's philosophy is the same as mine and he left the program in good standing, so I just hope to be able to continue the tradition." Januska also credited the influence of Dougherty …

With over two decades of coaching and 300 wins on his resume, South Brunswick High School's wrestling coach has led students to great heights on and off the mat.
Consistency at the leadership position is an aspect of coaching that has been pinned down (no pun intended) to the South Brunswick High School wrestling program for 23 years. This number equates to how many seasons Coach Joe Dougherty has been taking teenagers and not only transforming them into great wrestlers, but also into solid and mature young adults. Earlier this season, the head coach picked up the 300th win of his career, when his team beat Monroe 45-15 on Jan. 13. Those that know him best, including his assistant coaches, a few seniors on the squad, and the high school’s athletic director took the time recently, to reflect on the accomplishment. Speaking humbly, Coach Dougherty stated, “The win plateau was starting to become a …

Fundraiser will be held this weekend at the District Wrestling Tournament to raise funds for Lilian White, who recently received a bilateral lung transplant.
The South Brunswick High School wrestling team is continuing a yearly tradition to show solidarity with a teammate battling a hardship, while raising money for a good cause in the process. The grapplers will be dyeing their hair blue for this weekend's District Wrestling Tournament at SBHS, to support Lilian White in her fight against scleroderma. White, 44, is the wife of Fran White Sr., a long time PAL wrestling coach, and mother of senior varsity wrestler Fran White Jr. She received a bilateral lung transplant on Feb. 7, after being diagnosed with Scleroderma four years ago. Scleroderma is an autoimmune disorder, where the body attacks itself, and can often result in a thickening of the skin and the scarring of internal organs. The …
