Police Charge Two Residents in String of Burglaries

Two people charged in separate burglary investigations with stealing approximately $5,000 from township homes to purchase narcotics, police said.

Two township residents were charged earlier this month in a string of burglaries that netted close to $5,000 from South Brunswick homes. The crimes were not connected, but police said both suspects were using profits from the break-ins to purchase narcotics. “These cases are always difficult to investigate because of the random nature of the crime, but we are committed to following up on all leads," said Chief Raymond Hayducka. "These two arrests reflect good police work with strong community support." Robert Martin, 20, of South Brunswick, was arrested on Oct. 4 and charged in connection with two residential burglaries. Officers had been searching for Martin after he became a suspect in several local residential burglaries. South Brunswick Police Collect Record Amount of Medication

Operation Take Back collects 208 pounds of unused medication.

South Brunswick Police gathered record high numbers of unused medication as part of last weekend's "Operation Take Back." A total of 208 lbs. of medication was turned over to South Brunswick Police by residents, besting the previous average of about 40 lbs. The operation saw the Drug Enforcement Administration partner with local law enforcement to allow residents to safely dispose of any and all unused or expired medication. The collection included liquid products, such as cough medicine, and other prescription medication. DEA representatives said the amount of medication collected in South Brunswick was one of the largest in Middlesex County. "In the past we had averaged about 40 pounds of medicine, but this was a huge turnout. It is a …

Township Discusses Adding Special Traffic Officers

Special Police Officers would focus on problem areas for traffic violations.

With three major state roads passing through South Brunswick, the Township Council is considering a plan to add two officers to a special detail focusing on traffic problems. During a presentation Tuesday evening, South Brunswick Police Chief Raymond Hayducka, Sgt. Jim Ryan, and Sgt. Chris Giampietro explained the Special Law Enforcement Officer Program, which is most commonly used by Jersey shore police departments for added personnel during the summer. "The number one complaint we get is traffic complaints," Hayducka said. "This would be the primary focus." The special officers go through the academy and the same training as full time officers. However, unlike full time officers, the special officers do not have the same law enforcement …

South Brunswick Police Add Former Trenton Officer

Police department continues to add experienced officers laid off from big cities.

With hundreds of experienced police officers being laid off across New Jersey, the South Brunswick Police Department added another experienced officer who was victim of a budget crunch in an urban area. Earlier this month, Marcus Leysath became the newest member of the department after being one of 105 officers laid off from the Trenton Police Department. Leysath, who worked as an officer in Trenton for three and one-half years, said the situation in the capital reached a low point as the layoffs began. "There was very low morale there, it was a horrible time," Leysath said. "I was out of work for 9 months, a long 9 months. It was difficult for all of us, but the guys did their best to keep their spirits up." In late 2011, the department …

With an eye on fostering a relationship between the community and the South Brunswick Police Department, the annual National Night Out celebration will return next month.
