The South Brunswick Vikings 6B PAL basketball team won the Mid Jersey Basketball League West Division Championship with a hard fought win over the MSC Ivory Hawks (7-3) on Sunday at the Monroe Sports Center. The Vikings entered the playoffs as the top seed and the Hawks were the number two seed. After both teams handled their semifinal opponents on Saturday, they faced off at high noon on Sunday to decide the league championship. The game was well played and close throughout, with no team taking more than a 7-point lead. Brad Allen started the scoring off for the Vikings with the game's first two baskets. Over 400 youth grapplers will converge on South Brunswick High School Sunday morning for a 12-team tournament.
While the International Olympic Committee might be eliminating wrestling from the 2020 Olympic Games, the sport is still alive and well in South Brunswick. Over 400 kids from 12 teams will compete in a day-long tournament at South Brunswick High School this Sunday as part of the Delaware River Wrestling League's end of the year tournament. The tournament will feature kids from ages 4- to 12-years-old. "This league is designed for beginner wrestlers to give them more mat time and to match them by age, weight and skill level," said SBPAL Wrestling Director and Head Coach Martin Castimore. Register now for a 10-Week Winter Cheer Clinic in South Brunswick. This is an exciting way to introduce your child in grades K-6 to cheerleading or to keep your cheerleader's skills sharpened. Clinic will be led by the league's head coaches, including the SBPAL Cheer Director. It will consist of warm-ups, stunting, motion drills, tumbling, and cheers. Clinic will run on Tuesdays from Feb. 5 through April 9. from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Crossroads North Middle School Aux. Gym. Cost is $20. Registration is online Only at www.sbpalsports.org. South Brunswick moves on to a showdown of undefeated squads against Sayreville on Sunday.
After a resounding win last weekend in the state Pop Warner playoffs, South Brunswick's Jr. Pee Wee Vikings will face their biggest test of the season this weekend against a dominating Sayreville squad. The Vikings improved their record to 8-0 last Sunday with a 25-13 win over South River in the first round of the playoffs. The squad, comprised of kids 8-years-old to 11-years-old, needs to win at least two playoff games to be one of two teams from the region to advance to the Pop Warner Garden State Playoffs against teams from around New Jersey. After a successful opener last weekend at home, which saw the South Brunswick Vikings Junior Pee Wees and Pee Wees start off the year soundly defeating their Carteret Sportsmen opponents, it's time for the Vikes to hit the road. The South Brunswick PAL/Pop Warner program will be hosting a Registration Open House on Monday (April 9) evening at the South Brunswick Township Municipal Complex, located at 540 Ridge Road, in Monmouth Junction.
