Drost Walkoff Home Run Powers Vikings

South Brunswick High School baseball team improves to 5-1.

After just one inning on Tuesday, the South Brunswick High School baseball team found themselves in a 7-0 hole to Piscataway. But the Vikings would chip away scoring four runs the final inning, as senior Ken Drost crushed a walk-off home run for his second hit of the game, to give the Vikings a dramatic 8-7 victory. Austin Morse supplied most of the offense for SBHS, collecting five RBI on two hits. Nick Veglia added two hits, while Chris Huber had three runs scored. On Wednesday, the Vikings would provide no such drama in the rematch. SBHS crushed Piscataway by a score of 9-0. T.J. Ali Yildiz finished third in New Jersey at the state wrestling championships in Atlantic City on Sunday, with his only loss to the eventual state champion.

Yildiz, the Region V Champion at 182-pounds, suffered one loss over the weekend in Atlantic City to eventual state champion Johnny Sebastian, of Bergen Catholic, who won by a score of 19-7 in the semi-finals. Yildiz would rebound from that loss with a pinfall victory over Brad Schawrze, of New Egypt, in the consolation round Sunday. Yildiz opened the tournament with a 7-3 tiebreaker win over Glenn Cross, of Matawan, and also recorded pinfall victories over Verona's Frank Greco and Jordan Fox, of St. Peter's Prep, over the weekend. South Brunswick High School junior Alex Klein wins Alzheimer’s Foundation of America video competition exploring his grandmother's battle with the disease.

Over the last four years, Dayton teen Alex Klein has watched his beloved grandmother turn from a vibrant member of the family into a virtual stranger. Suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease, Alex's grandmother began a slow progression downwards as her mind became trapped by the hideous disease, leaving his family to pick up the pieces. "It impacted my family in a lot of ways. My grandma isn't my grandma anymore," Alex, 16, said. "She's changed into someone no one can understand. It affects my entire family. We have so much love to give her and it's hard knowing she can't reciprocate. It's really tough for us to deal with in a lot of aspects." After Alex's mother discovered a video contest online from the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, the …

SBHS Grapplers Head into District Wrestling Tournament

Top five ranked Ali Yildiz and Jordan Pagano lead the South Brunswick High School team into districts as the road to Atlantic City for the state championships begins.

This season has been one of transition for the South Brunswick High School wrestling team. New head coach Bobby Januska took over the reigns of the program from the legendary Joe Dougherty this year, after the long time coach stepped down in 2012 after amassing a school record 305 wins. Januska, who spent six seasons as an assistant at SBHS after coming over from North Brunswick, has the Vikings sitting at 16-13 as the District 20 Tournament begins this weekend. "The transition has been really smooth and that's a credit to the kids," Januska said. "Coach Dougherty's philosophy is the same as mine and he left the program in good standing, so I just hope to be able to continue the tradition." Januska also credited the influence of Dougherty …
