South Brunswick YMCA Files for Bankruptcy

Declining membership and donations leads to reorganization.

The ongoing impact of the recession hit one of South Brunswick's cornerstone institutions this week.  On Friday, the South Brunswick Family YMCA filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey in Trenton. In a statement released to the media Friday, The Y's Board of Directors cited difficulty sparked by a decline in membership and community donations. “Like so many businesses and organizations in our area, the South Brunswick Family YMCA has been adversely affected by the economic recession," the board said in a statement. "Declines in membership and donations over the past few years have presented financial challenges, but we believe the action we have taken today is an important first step …

What needs to be reorganized is our facility and most importantly our management. Maureen, the new exec, watched the y go bankrupt once and is the worst person to deal with. She goes about everything in the snobbiest rudest way possible. Rather than try and introduce new programs and plans to bring people in, she harasses the staff constantly over little things that have no effect on our outcome …   more ›

Letter to the Editor

Letter: Child Protection in South Brunswick

Tom Libassi, Executive Director of South Brunswick Family YMCA

I would like to take a moment to talk to you about a very important subject – Child Protection. For the past several years, I have been serving as co-Chair of the Child Protection Task Force for the NJ YMCA State Alliance. As you may know, all Ys are independent. The Alliance is the affiliation of all New Jersey Y's that discuss and address various issues facing many Y's. As a result of the Child Protection Task Force, Ys across NJ have been implementing updated policies, procedures and guidelines to enhance the safety and protection our children. The policies cover everything from background checks, fingerprinting and references of Y employees and volunteers, to child abuse training, social networking, babysitting and outside contact, …
