South Brunswick Girl Continues Efforts for Cancer Patients

Brunswick Acres Elementary School student Jillian Knehr went beyond just donating money she raised to help fight cancer, she also donated her hair.

While some kids dream of changing the world, one young South Brunswick child has recognized that bringing about meaningful change for others can be accomplished one small good deed at a time. Jillian Knehr, 8, a student at Brunswick Acres Elementary School, was greatly impacted about a year ago when she heard the story of "Alex's Lemonade Stand," a charity that funds research and makes new treatments available to children with cancer. The charity was founded in honor of cancer victim Alexandra “Alex” Scott, who at the age of 4-years-old set up a lemonade stand to give money to doctors searching for a cure for the disease. South Brunswick Girls Chop off Hair for Cancer Patients

Indian Fields Elementary School and Crossroads South Middle School hosted separate events this week where students, parents and staff donated their hair to be turned into wigs for cancer patients.

A lineup of hairdressers were busy at work cutting the locks off dozens of girls from various age groups, but this was not some hot new salon opening in South Brunswick. Both Indian Fields Elementary School and Crossroads South Middle School held special events this week that saw about 75 combined women donate their hair to be turned into wigs for cancer patients. At Indian Fields on Monday, over 20 donors signed up to cut their hair for the Locks of Love program. Locks of Love provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged kids under 21-years-old suffering from hair loss due to any diagnosis.  This is the second year in a row Indian Fields has held a hair donation event. I'm semi bald so I cover it up with an old doffer's hat. Don't need a rug and save money. Nice of the kids to do this though and hope their hair grows back in sooner than later.   more ›
