New Jersey's Office of Emergency Management is monitoring the storm and calling on residents to be prepared.
Gov. Chris Christie has ordered the activation of the State Emergency Operations Center Wednesday morning in anticipation of a mid-Atlantic coastal storm expected to bring heavy rain and snow, high winds and coastal flooding to New Jersey. The New Jersey Office of Emergency Management is currently monitoring the storm, which should arrive tonight and last through Friday morning. Col. Several cancellations have been announced in light of the impending nor'easter expected to impact South Brunswick through Thursday morning. All after school activities and evening events have been cancelled in the South Brunswick School District for Wednesday, March 6. Tonight's South Brunswick Planning Board Meeting has also been cancelled and has been rescheduled for March 13. Activities at the township Community Center are still scheduled for this evening. In the latest update from the electric utility, 97 percent who lost power during Sandy have the lights back on.
The clouds are lifting in PSEG's service area. Ninety-seven percent of the utility's 1.7 million customers affected by Hurricane Sandy last week have had their power restored, the company said in their latest update. That leaves 45,000 still without power from the hurricane. More good news from Wednesday's nor'easter is that 20,000 customers who lost power had it restored by 8 pm Thursday night. This included customers affected by an equipment failure in the substation located in the Sewaren section of Woodbridge. The two central New Jersey counties had the highest impact from Wednesday's storm that brought heavy, wet snow and downed power lines to the area.
Middlesex and Mercer Counties took the brunt of Nor'easter Athena's heavy, sodden snow Wednesday, said Ralph LaRossa, president and chief operating officer of PSE&G in a morning conference call. LaRossa said he had had a meeting with mayors from the area in East Brunswick yesterday when a 69,000 volt line in the substation there blew but was quickly repaired. As of Thursday morning, 40,000 PSE&G customers were impacted by up to six inches of snow from the nor'easter, while 70,000 customers were still suffering from the lack of electricity from Hurricane Sandy last week. Heavy snow and a high wind advisory for Middlesex County Wednesday into Thursday could lead to more power outages for South Brunswick.
With thousands of South Brunswick residents still without power, the arrival of a nor'easter on Wednesday raises new concerns for an area still reeling from Hurricane Sandy. "We still have a number of people without power," said South Brunswick Police spokesman Sgt. Jim Ryan. "Kendall Park still has more than a dozen streets without power. There's no power in the Davidsons Mill Road-Deans area, and Fresh Ponds Road. There are other small sections here and there without power, so we're just trying to hold our own right now." As the named Nor'easter Athena slams into central Jersey, PSEG said they're doing everything they can to get the lights back on. As of a 6 pm update, the utility said that the nor'easter has caused an additional 60,000 power outages statewide. That number, the update said, is expected to increase as strong winds arrive with the storm tonight. Linemen can work in the rain, said PSEG spokeswoman Rena Esposito. But the high winds make it dangerous for them to work in bucket trucks they use to complete work on elevated wires. Federal law prohibits work in the trucks in winds greater than 40 mph. Hurricane Sandy may help New Jersey survive the nor'easter scheduled to hit the state Wednesday. That's because, with all the Sandy power outages, PSE&G president and chief operating officer Ralph LaRossa called in the cavalry - that is, linemen and workers from other states who flooded into the state to help restore power. Just Tuesday, LaRossa spoke on a media conference call and trumpeted that the company obtained the services of another 600 linemen, coming in from Pennsylvania, just last night. Hundreds of thousands of New Jerseyans still reeling without power as temperatures took a decidedly colder turn the last two nights now face the prospect of a major Nor'easter striking the state Wednesday into Thursday. The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for the tri-state area, and it's predictions have grown more dire in recent days. Out of state power line crews that did work in my neighborhood told me that the trees "up here" weren't trimmed properly to avoid falling on power lines.
