Hugs for Brady Needs Volunteers for 5k on April 27

Adult volunteers needed to assist with parking, water stations, monitoring bounce huts and more.

As South Brunswick's Hugs for Brady Foundation has grown exponentially in size and scope since their inception, so too have the size of their events. The third annual Hugs for Brady 5k Twilight Run/Walk already has 400 people signed up to participate. Hugs for Brady was started by Mike and Sherrie Wells, of Kendall Park, in honor of their son Brady, who died in July 2010 at the age of 23 months from pediatric leukemia. The Wells started the Hugs for Brady Foundation with the goal of helping the Cancer Institute of New Jersey and the Bristol-Myers Squibb Children's Hospital (BMSCH) fight pediatric cancer. The non-profit organization supports all causes concerning pediatric cancer, from buying custom built wagons, computers, televisions and…

Hugs for Brady Helps Another Local Family

At just 2-years-old, Brooke Nudelman is waging a courageous battle with cancer.

On April 30, 2012, Shari, Jay, Hannah and Brooke Nudelman were viciously thrown into the world of childhood cancer. Up until two weeks before April 30, Brooke Hope Nudelman was a happy, playful and healthy looking 14-month-old little girl who loved playing with her older sister, Hannah, and her dog, Bella. Around mid-April, Shari and Jay noticed Brooke acting "funny" or "off." Brooke was taken to her pediatrician. She was examined, but nothing of suspicion was found. Certainly the tumors aggressively growing on her liver, lungs and mediastinum were not apparent. One week later, Shari was not convinced nothing was wrong with her daughter. Brooke's stomach was distended and Brooke appeared jaundice. Again, Shari brought her to the …

The Bravery of a Hugs for Brady Cancer Warrior

Xander Denberg, 4, was an infant when he was diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer.

Xander Denberg has been close to the heart of Hugs for Brady since inception of the foundation. You see, Xander and Brady Wells were both diagnosed and treated during the same time at RWJ/BMS and CINJ.  Matt and Katie Denberg first noticed something wrong with Xander when Xander started screaming, painfully, in his crib at night.  After many doctor visits, missed diagnosis' and ultrasound's, it was finally revealed that Xander had cancer, Stage 3, Neuroblastoma.   After two rounds of chemotherapy scans revealed that Xander's disease was not responding to therapy.  When a parent hears that the cancer invading their child's body is not responding to traditional therapy, a horrifying situation becomes all the more horrifying.   Matt and Katie…

Young South Brunswick Cancer Survivor Inspires

Edward Migliore's long road to recovery from bone cancer surgery.

Like a typical 12-year-old boy, Edward Migliore loves to climb trees. The thought this South Brunswick sixth grader – the son of Paul and Carol Migliore – could today pull himself up the branches of a neighborhood tree, however, would seem to be no short of a miracle to those who know his story. Two years ago, two-thirds of Edward’s femur was removed after he was diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer. Following surgery, 14 rounds of chemo and more than a year of rehabilitation at Jersey Physical Therapy, Edward is out of his wheelchair and – most importantly – free of cancer. His journey was literally taken one step at a time. “When I first came to physical therapy, I couldn’t have really walked without someone being right next to me …

It was our pleasure working with Edward. We really had fun getting to know him and he definitely serves as an inspiration to us all at Jersey PT. Another amazing thing that is not stated in the article is that Edward is currently taking Circus classes! It's been fun attending Hugs for Brady events together and reconnecting with him and his great family.   more ›

South Brunswick Child Continues Fight With Cancer

After 15 months of treatment for Stage 3 High Risk Neuroblastoma, Jake Holmes had his Broviac port removed and returned to school.

Since 2010, South Brunswick's Hugs for Brady Foundation has worked tirelessly to raise awareness that kids get cancer too. Unfortunately, the township has several reminders of this stark fact, whether it be through the loss of 9-year-old South Brunswick child Brandon Dominguez with brain cancer, or through 6-year old Jake Holmes, of Kendall Park. After 15 months of treatment for Stage 3 High Risk, Neuroblastoma Jake had his Broviac port removed on Feb. 3. This means there are no more baths/showers with Press N' Seal. Jake was diagnosed in November, 2011 and lives in Kendall Park. He returned to school on Feb. 19, 2013. Hugs for Brady was started by Sherrie and her husband Mike Wells, of Kendall Park, in honor of their son Brady, who …

What About Now: Fighting Cancer in South Brunswick

South Brunswick's Hugs for Brady Foundation holds third annual winter gala.

In 2010, Sherrie and Mike Wells lost their 2-year-old son, Brady, to non-differentiated acute leukemia. Brady was diagnosed with the disease when he was just 13 months old. Motivated by their grief, the Wells started the Hugs For Brady Foundation in hopes of raising awareness for and advancing the fight against pediatric cancer. At the foundation's third annual Winter Gala held on Jan. 26, the foundation expected to donate $50,000 to help fund a new pediatric oncology/hematology Young Investigator’s program at the The Cancer Institute of New Jersey.  The gala, held at the Heldrich Hotel in New Brunswick, featured the presentation of the Hugs for Brady Pediatric Cancer Humanitarian of the Year Award to Mary Gondek, owner of Confectionately …

Hugs for Brady Winter Gala to Honor Local Humanitarian

Hugs for Brady Pediatric Cancer Humanitarian of the Year Award to be presented to Mary Gondek, owner of Confectionately Yours, at annual gala Jan. 26.

At last January’s Winter Gala, a fundraising event held by the philanthropy, the foundation announced they would be donating $50,000 to help fund a new pediatric oncology/hematology Young Investigator’s program at the The Cancer Institute of New Jersey. They expect to donate another $50,000 from this year’s gala. The gala, the third organized by Hugs for Brady, will be held Saturday, Jan. 26, from 6-11 p.m. at the …

Whiz Kids

Inspired by Tragedy, South Brunswick Girl Helps Kids With Cancer

When 8-year-old Jillian Knehr heard the story behind "Alex's Lemonade Stand," she was driven to get involved to help kids battling cancer.

A lemonade stand is a time-honored tradition for budding entrepreneurs looking to make a few extra dollars. But for 8-year-old Brunswick Acres Elementary School student Jillian Knehr, a lemonade stand was a tool to lend a helping hand to the youngest victims of a deadly disease. Last month, Jillian ventured to Reichler Park during a softball tournament and spent the day selling refreshments at "Jillian's Jerseylicious Lemonade" to raise money for "Alex's Lemonade Stand," a charity that funds research and makes new treatments available to children with cancer. The charity was founded in honor of cancer victim Alexandra “Alex” Scott, who at the age of 4-years-old set up a lemonade stand to give money to doctors searching for a cure for the …

"Our goals never change, which are to raise awareness first and foremost," said Hugs for Brady co-founder Sherrie Wells.
