The Harlem Wizards basketball team is taking over the gym at South Brunswick High School on Thursday, Oct. 25, with its own brand of tricks, hoops and alley oops. The Wizards hit the court at 7:00 p.m. against the South Brunswick Superstars, a team composed of our South Brunswick teachers and other community members. The event will benefit the South Brunswick Citizens for Independent Living (CIL), a non-profit organization for developmentally disabled adults. The Wizards will be a tough team to beat: their current winning streak exceeds 3,000 games. With a roster full of former NBA players, college greats and countless street ballers. As an organization that survives on the work of volunteers, the Citizens for Independent Living believe strongly in recognizing those that give their time to serve South Brunswick each year. CIL is a community-based, non-profit organization with the mission of empowering developmentally disabled adults to live independent, productive lives in the community. Their annual Barry Indik Memorial Awards honor individuals who have shown outstanding dedication, service and friendship to the South Brunswick community. The Citizens for Independent Living is looking for nominations of South Brunswick residents who have exhibited outstanding community service with the annual Barry Indik Memorial Award. The award honors individuals who have shown outstanding dedication, service and friendship to the South Brunswick community. The CIL began in 1984 as a community-based, non-profit organization with the mission of empowering developmentally disabled adults to live independent, productive lives in the community. One of CIL’s primary goals was housing, and it developed a clear direction through the efforts, energy and expertise of the late Dr. Indik. Citizens for Independent Living program teaches adults with developmental disabilities how to cook healthy, inexpensive meals.
To some, ground beef, kidney beans, mixed vegetables, and crushed tomatoes are random ingredients. But to the residents at South Brunswick’s Citizens for Independent Living (CIL) program, those ingredients come together to make beef minestrone soup. For the past two years, participants in the CIL program received training from volunteer Linda Fekete, the program’s Director Linda King, and other volunteers, on how to cook inexpensive homemade meals for themselves, Fekete said. Take one or two tenderized chicken breast cutlets, coat them lightly with mayonnaise, dip them in bread crumbs, add homemade tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese, put it in an oven heated to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and 40-45 minutes later you have homemade chicken …
