Brunswick Acres Elementary School hosts Autism Awareness Month event.
Inside a dimmed gymnasium at Brunswick Acres Elementary School Tuesday, hundreds of little wrists extended to the sky illuminating a blue light as a symbol of support for world Autism Awareness Month. The event was part of a year-round effort throughout the school to raise awareness and provide support to students suffering from Autism Spectrum Disorder. Brunswick Acres Elementary School is home to the South Brunswick elementary level autism program. The school not only educates kids on the autism spectrum, but also works to develop awareness among their peers to develop understanding. Young South Brunswick art students design shells to raise money for victims of Superstorm Sandy at the Jersey Shore.
South Brunswick was plunged into darkness after the devastation of Superstorm Sandy knocked out power in some parts of town for weeks, however the images were still inescapable. Even without power, residents throughout the township were still affected by the level of destruction visited upon the Jersey Shore, as once familiar landmarks washed away into the Atlantic Ocean. As South Brunswick struggled with its own restoration efforts, staff members of the South Brunswick School District sought ways to get help those in need, while empowering students as well. Recently, Brunswick Acres Elementary School launched an initiative called "Shells for NJ Shores" to raise money for coastal relief efforts. "With something as devatstating as Sandy, …

Brunswick Acres Elementary School needs help from the public to win a $5,000 grant from Kris Wine and Americans for the Arts for the school's art program.
Residents have until Oct. 31 to help the art program at Brunswick Acres Elementary School win a $5,000 grant. The Kris Wine and Americans for the Arts are offering $25,000 in grants to support K-12 public school art programs throughout the country. The school with the most votes on the Kris Wine Facebook page will win the top prize of $5,000 and Brunswick Acres is in a tight race for the top spot. "The cost of art materials goes up each year, while the budget for it gets lower each year," said Brunswick Acres art teacher Suzanne Tiedemann in a previous interview. "In other districts the art program is the first to get cut, so we're lucky to be in a district that supports the arts, but we're always looking for a way to subsidize the cost. …

Brunswick Acres Elementary School needs help from the public to win a $5,000 grant for the art program.
Staff and students at Brunswick Acres Elementary School are getting creative with a contest to secure a $5,000 grant for the art program by urging the public to "Vote B.A. Daily." Last week about 550 students and staff members filmed a music video parody of the hit song "Call Me Maybe" titled "Vote B.A. Daily," in hopes of spurring support for the school's effort to win a grant from Kris Wine and Americans for the Arts. "The cost of art materials goes up each year, while the budget for it gets lower each year," said Brunswick Acres art teacher Suzanne Tiedemann. "In other districts the art program is the first to get cut, so we're lucky to be in a district that supports the arts, but we're always looking for a way to subsidize the cost. …

The development of empathy in the entire school population plays an important role in educating kids on the autism spectrum in South Brunswick.
In April, Autism Awareness Month shined a spotlight on a complex brain disorder that is often misunderstood. But in South Brunswick's schools, the work to understand and educate kids suffering from autism spectrum disorder continues year-round. Brunswick Acres Elementary School is home to the South Brunswick elementary level autism program. The school not only educates kids on the autism spectrum, but also works to develop awareness among their peers to develop understanding. "One of the biggest misconceptions about kids with autism is that they don't attach or aren't connected with people," said Brunswick Acres Autism Specialist Cynthia Helfgott. "They do have social deficits that may lead some people to believe that they don't want to …

Kim, So thankful for your's volunteerism to the program. Cindy Helfgott, Colleen Walker and I started that program back in the early 2000's just for that reason of uniting typical students with students from the Autism Program. It has been so successful and rewarding for all involved. I loved my job and the Autism Program was the most rewarding part of teaching. I love retirement but truly miss …   more ›
