Trial Period Begins for Beekman Road Speed Reduction

Speed limit officially lowered from 45 miles per hour to 35 miles per hour.

Motorists on Beekman Road will have a few weeks to adjust to a new speed limit before police begin handing out violations.  After being approved by the South Brunswick Township Council earlier this year, the new speed limit on Beekman has been put in place, officially lowered from 45 miles per hour to 35 miles per hour. "This is part of the learning period. There is new signage out and the police department will be giving out warnings for the next 30 to 60 days to get people acclimated," said Councilman Joseph Camarota at Tuesday's meeting.  In May, the council approved a plan to lower the speed limit and to install two crosswalks adjacent to the entrances of both Veterans Park and Beech Woods Park on Beekman. An estimated 3,000 cars per …

As a local resident who uses Beekman road both as a pedestrian/bicyclist and a driver, I find no need to put a 35 mph speed limit on a wide open easily visible road with only a few residences and clearly visible crosswalks. SR 27 in South Brunswick has traffic lights, businesses, residences, and crosswalks while having a 50 mph speed limit.   more ›

Township to Continue Search for Alternate Park and Ride Location

Concerns remain about traffic impact from a Park and Ride at intersection of Beekman Road and Route 27.

South Brunswick Township will continue to seek an alternative location for a new Park and Ride previously approved for the intersection of Beekman Road and Route 27. During Tuesday evening's Township Council meeting, township officials confirmed talks are ongoing to find an alternate site for the Park and Ride due to concerns about the added traffic the facility could add to Beekman Road. "We've been looking at other locations, but it needs to be on property the township has ownership of," said Public Affairs Coordinator Ron Schmalz. "We can't discuss where we're looking, but we are looking for another location." A plan for two new Park and Rides was approved in December 2011, with a second new Park and Ride to be constructed near the …

I have concerns about having a Park and Ride anyplace in South Brunswick. It will have a negative environmental, economic, and quality of life impact on any part of our South Brunswick Community.   more ›

Council to Discuss New Location for Beekman Road Park and Ride Tonight

The Township Council will consider an alternate site for a new Park and Ride previously approved at the intersection of Beekman Road and Route 27.

Discussions will continue at tonight's South Brunswick Township Council meeting over whether to change the location of a new Park and Ride facility previously approved for the intersection of Route 27 and Beekman Road. A plan for two new Park and Rides was approved in December last year, with a second new Park and Ride to be constructed near the intersection of Route 1 and Independence Way.  However, residents of the area have been vocal about their concerns about the negative traffic impact a new Park and Ride would present to Beekman Road. "This is a nightmare and it doesn't belong on Beekman," said Beekman Road resident Sue Nissenblatt during a meeting last year. "I don't think (this decision) is in our best interest." At the time the …

Please voice your opposition to the Park and Ride on Beekman Road to the Mayor and Council! We are finally getting the improvements to the intersection of Beekman and Rt. 27 which will be meaningless if more traffic is added with a Park and Ride. This location was ONLY chosen to avoid losing grant funds. It was not picked because it was appropriate or the best location for a park and ride. Let …   more ›

Beekman Road Safety Upgrade Targeted for Mid-Summer Completion

Two crosswalks to be installed and speed limit will be lowered from 45 miles per hour to 35 miles per hour.

South Brunswick officials believe the recently approved safety measures for Beekman Road will be completed by the middle of the summer. At last week's meeting, the Township Council formally held a second reading for an ordinance that will involve the installation of two crosswalks and will lower the speed limit in Beekman from 45 miles per hour to 35 miles per hour. "We want to get this done as soon as possible," said Mayor Frank Gambatese. "We need to wait about 20 days for the vote to take effect, so we're looking at a mid to late summer completion." The two crosswalks are to be placed adjacent to the entrances of both Veterans Park and Beech Woods Park, according to Public Affairs Coordinator Ron Schmalz.  "A lot of the people who are …

Beekman Road Safety Measures Move Forward

Speed limit to be lowered and two crosswalks to be installed, Township Council will also discuss moving location of new Park and Ride to a different site.

The South Brunswick Township Council is moving forward with a plan to improve safety for pedestrians on Beekman Road. The plan will lower the speed limit on Beekman Road from 45 miles per hour to 35 miles per hour, and involve the installation of two crosswalks adjacent to the entrances of both Veterans Park and Beech Woods Park, according to Public Affairs Coordinator Ron Schmalz.  "A lot of the people who are utilizing those parks live on the opposite side of Beekman Road, so we asked the police department to take a look, and they concurred that a lot of pedestrians are crossing that road. So it’s important we get those crosswalks up," Schmalz said. “Because of the crosswalks, it's also recommended that we lower the speed limit as well…

Beekman Road Safety Precautions Imminent

South Brunswick Township Council moving forward with plan to lower speed limit and install crosswalks on Beekman Road.

The South Brunswick Township Council is moving forward with a plan to improve safety on Beekman Road for pedestrians. In addition to the installation of three crosswalks on the roadway, the township is also exploring lowering the speed limit from the current 45 miles per hour. "We need to do those crosswalks, I don't think we need any additional information for that," said Mayor Frank Gambatese during Tuesday evening's council meeting. "I think those crosswalks are absolutely crucial." Crosswalks are being discussed for locations near Lori Drive, Jared Boulevard and near the entrance to Veterans Park .   "In terms of the topography of the road near the parks, folks who are crossing from the street, with a 45 mile per hour speed limit, …

First of all, the township needs to lower the speed limit on Beekman Road to 35 mph. Lowering the speed limit to 40 mph does nothing because most drivers will drive 5 mph over the limit anyway. Another safety issue is that a lot of drivers going south on Rt.1 do not continue through the light to use the u - turn lane. They exit before the light and make a left turn on the ramp. The township …   more ›
