Zumbathon for Breast Cancer Awareness at YMCA

The South Brunswick Family YMCA will be hosting a Zumbathon this weekend to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

As countless organizations hold events for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the South Brunswick Family YMCA will do their part on Saturday with a Zumbathon event to raise money for the American Cancer Society. "We're going to have our regular instructors and two guest instructors coming out and will introduce a new form of Zumba," said YMCA Group Exercise Coordinator Kim Zsamba. "We'll also have many vendors coming out like Mary Kay, and will also have cupcakes and baked goods for sale. We're trying to raise as much money as possible for a good cause, which is something our members like to do." The event will be held on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with three straight hours of non-stop Zumba. There will also be numerous prizes and …

South Brunswick Girls Team Up to Fight Cancer

Eighth-graders holding fundraiser at Family Fun Night on Friday to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

While numerous South Brunswick kids are spending summer vacation taking advantage of the warm weather at the beach and pool, a group of incoming eighth-graders at Crossroads South Middle School are trying to make a difference for those in need. Five middle school girls are sponsoring a fundraiser this Friday night as part of the township's Family Fun Night at Beech Woods Park. The girls, who call themselves "Food for Friends," will be selling various baked goods and snacks at the event to raise money in the fight against cancer. "We thought it would be a great idea to sell food because we want to help the community," said Sukriti Prashar. "This is our way of contributing by selling food and donating it to the American Cancer Society (ACS…

South Brunswick Girls Chop off Hair for Cancer Patients

Indian Fields Elementary School and Crossroads South Middle School hosted separate events this week where students, parents and staff donated their hair to be turned into wigs for cancer patients.

A lineup of hairdressers were busy at work cutting the locks off dozens of girls from various age groups, but this was not some hot new salon opening in South Brunswick. Both Indian Fields Elementary School and Crossroads South Middle School held special events this week that saw about 75 combined women donate their hair to be turned into wigs for cancer patients. At Indian Fields on Monday, over 20 donors signed up to cut their hair for the Locks of Love program. Locks of Love provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged kids under 21-years-old suffering from hair loss due to any diagnosis.  This is the second year in a row Indian Fields has held a hair donation event. "It's really important for kids to feel that they can help other…

Crossroads Girls to Cut Hair for Cancer Patients

A group of students at Crossroads South Middle School will be chopping off 8 inches of their hair for wigs to be donated to cancer patients.

With the South Brunswick School District's focus on five core values - Honesty, Respect, Kindness, Service and Responsibility - a group of girls at Crossroads Middle School have taken that message to heart. Eighth-grader Elizabeth Kenny and friends have worked to rally 47 girls to donate 8 inches of their hair to the Pantene Beautiful Lengths program, which turns the hair into free, real-hair wigs for women with cancer.  "Me and my friend Janine were looking into donating our hair and were looking into the Locks of Love program," Elizabeth said. "Then we found Pantene Beautiful Lengths and decided on that, so we wanted to get the whole school involved. After meeting with (Principal Ray Tucholski), he said we could do it at the school. We …

NJ Lawmaker Pushes Tobacco Tax Hike

Measure would direct extra revenue to efforts to deter smoking.

New Jersey lawmakers are considering raising the tax on all non-cigarette tobacco products to the same level as cigarettes. That would add millions to the dollars already flowing into the state’s economy. New Jersey taxes cigarettes at $2.70 a pack, among the highest in the nation. The revenue – close to $770 million -- goes to paying off a state bond issue, reimbursing hospitals for charity care to the poor and uninsured, and funding the general costs of state government. But just $1.5 million went to tobacco control programs last year, down from $30 million in 2003. The extra revenue from creating tax parity on all tobacco products would be used to expand efforts to discourage New Jerseyans -- especially teens -- from picking up the …

It's good to read that the NJ legislature is considering a revitalized effort to raise revenue to support its tobacco control programs that are proven to give a return on investment of approximately 3:1 on every dollar spent. In this case, for every dollar the NJ legislature spends on tobacco control efforts, $3 will be saved in healthcare costs that that state will be responsible for in treating…   more ›
