Run With the Vikings 5k, Jazz Cafe Highlight South Brunswick Weekend

Friday

South Brunswick Jazz Cafe with Shikantaza, South Brunswick Municipal Complex, 540 Route 522, Monmouth Junction, 8 p.m.

Treat yourself to an evening of hidden gems from the Great American Songbook, along with original and esoteric works performed by the jazz trio SHIKANTAZA, featuring Doug Miller on piano, Bernhard Geiger on acoustic bass, Brandon Lewin on percussion, and special guests Lori Pantaleo, Tanya Saunders, and Robert Bullington, vocals.  

Saturday

Feathers and Flight Class at Plainsboro Preserve
 Plainsboro Preserve, 80 Scotts Corner Road, Cranbury, 3:30 p.m.

Ever wish you could fly?  At the program, examine bird specimens, bones, and feathers and try to uncover the secrets of flight including: aerodynamics, airfoil, uplift, and feather design. After some intensive indoor investigation, you will head outside and try your hand at making things fly.  

Sunday

Run with the Vikings 5K, South Brunswick High School, 9:30 a.m.

The Viking Athletic Club of South Brunswick High School will be hosting the 9th annual Run with the Vikings 5K and One Mile Fun Run. The one-mile run starts at 9:30 a.m. and the USATF certified 5K starts at 10 a.m. Both cost $20 to register. T-shirts and goody bags to registered runners as they last. Registration on race day is also available and starts at 7:30 a.m. There are also race sign ups at Road Runner Sports at the Shoppes in North Brunswick on Nov. 1, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The Test of Freedom, South Brunswick Public Library, 2 p.m.

The Test of Freedom is a winner of the 2013 Filmmaker’s Choice Award at the San Diego Black Film Festival.  It is about the challenges of being a Muslim-American. The Library is hoping to have the film’s director Khaliff Watkins present  for the discussion following the film.  The film length is 71 mins.
