South Brunswick Food Pantry Collects over $10k Last Week in Challenge

Feinstein Foundation's annual Challenge to Fight Hunger drives a strong week of donations for the South Brunswick Food Pantry.

Several large donations in week two helped the South Brunswick  outdo the opening week totals for the Feinstein Foundation's annual Challenge to Fight Hunger.

The Food Pantry received $10,799.26 in monetary donations and 1,479 food items last week.

"We already have several large pledges to be paid by the end of the year and have received a large donation from one of our big supporters," said Social Services Director LouAnne Wolf. "We are thrilled with the turn out to date, and thank all who have donated, as well as those folks who have scheduled upcoming food drives."

Each year, from March 1 through April 30, the Feinstein Foundation challenges anti-hunger agencies across the country to raise funds and collect as many food donations as possible.  Alan Shawn Feinstein, founder of The Feinstein Foundation, then divides his donation of $1 million proportionately among approximately 2,000 agencies participating in the challenge.  Each food item donated is valued at $1 per item.

The more donations the pantry receives, the more money comes in from the Feinstein Foundation.  An estimated $230 million was raised by anti-hunger agencies across the country during last year's challenge.

19,703 food items and donated $46,126 in cash to the pantry during the Challenge to Fight Hunger. South Brunswick generated the 8th highest donations total in the state of New Jersey.

Social Services is currently seeing an average of about 12 to 16 families per week.

"Without all of your support the South Brunswick Food Pantry and Social Services would not be able to provide the assistance it does to the 50-plus families each month," Wolf said. "Thank you. Also a big thank you to the South Brunswick Library and the South Brunswick YMCA who have sent out email blasts for us. That has aided us in reaching out to thousands of hopeful supporters."
