South Brunswick Delivers for Food Pantry

Stamp Out Hunger campaign a huge success thanks to donations from community and hard work of letter carriers.

Thanks to the altruism of the community and the hard work of the Kendall Park Post Office, this past weekend's Stamp Out Hunger drive was a resounding success for the South Brunswick Food Pantry.

"Stamp Out Hunger was hugely successful this past Saturday," said Social Services Director LouAnne Wolf on Monday.  "Our Public Works department picked up the food at the post office this morning. One full size truck filled with food, as well as a full van filled with food was dropped off. A big thank you goes out to the Kendall Park Post Office and the postal workers for picking up all the food at the homes that left it, as well as to the community for their generosity."

Over 1,500 National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC)  branches from each state had more than 230,000 letter carriers collecting non-perishable goods from people’s mailboxes on Saturday, according to the NALC.

The NALC stated, “According to the Agriculture Department's most recent study of food security in the United States in 2009, the number of Americans living in so-called 'food insecure' homes topped 50 million. Of those, 17.2 million are children.”

The success of the drive was crucial for the South Brunswick Food Pantry to be able to continue to provide for the rising need from the less fortunate in the community.

"We are well stocked heading into the end of the spring and school year," Wolf said. "We are at a good place to be."

Food Pantry volunteers spent hours on Monday sorting through all of the food donated by the community.  Wolf had high praise for the efforts of the post office and letter carriers for their work to aid the less fortunate.

"We are thrilled that the Kendall Park Post Office does this every year and the carriers take the extra time on the Saturday of the event to do the pick ups, and then to carry everything into the post office," she said.  "This is a huge help we have come to depend on."
