Only a Few Days Left in the Challenge to Fight Hunger

Residents have until April 30 to donate.

The Challenge to Fight Hunger is nearing its conclusion this week as South Brunswick residents have until April 30 to help the South Brunswick Food Pantry provide aid and food to the less fortunate.

"Four more days are left in the Feinstein Foundation Challenge," said Social Services Director LouAnne Wolf.  "We have surpassed last year’s total by almost $10,000. We are awaiting some monetary donations and hope more food will be coming in as well. I will total all of it and send it off to the Feinstein Foundation on Monday, May 2."

Each year, from March 1 through April 30, the Feinstein Foundation challenges anti-hunger agencies across the country to raise funds and collect as many food donations as possible.  Alan Shawn Feinstein, founder of The Feinstein Foundation, then divides his donation of $1 million proportionately among approximately 2,000 agencies participating in the challenge.  Each food item donated is valued at $1 per item.

The more donations the pantry receives, the more money comes in from the Feinstein Foundation.  An estimated $230 million was raised by anti-hunger agencies across the country during last year's challenge.  During last year's challenge, the South Brunswick Food Pantry collected 16,092 food items and raised $31,584 in donations.

Wolf is hopeful the community will continue to be as generous in these final days of the challenge as they have throughout the drive.

"I hope to have a grand total then of $60,000," she said. "Please help us to reach that goal. Thank you all for your continued support of the South Brunswick Social Services Department and the food pantry."
