Food Pantry in Final Week of Challenge

Residents have until April 30 to donate food or money to the South Brunswick Food Pantry in the annual Challenge to Fight Hunger.

The time is winding down to submit donations to the South Brunswick Food Pantry to qualify in the Feinstein Foundation's annual Challenge to Fight Hunger. Another strong week of donations helped the pantry get within reach of matching last year's totals in the Challenge.

"The donations to date have been wonderful," said Social Services Director LouAnne Wolf. "We are getting so very close to matching last year’s totals, and we have until the end of the day on Monday, April 30."

Social Services received just over $4,300 in monetary donations last week and over 3,500 food items were donated, as well.

"Thank you to everyone who has been so generous to remember that people are hungry every day, not just at the holiday time," Wolf said.

For those donating food items this week, the pantry is in need of snack foods and coffee.

In 2011, 19,703 food items and donated $46,126 in cash to the pantry during the Challenge to Fight Hunger. South Brunswick generated the eighth-highest donations total in the state of New Jersey.

Each year, from March 1 through April 30, the Feinstein Foundation challenges anti-hunger agencies across the country to raise funds and collect as many food donations as possible.  Alan Shawn Feinstein, founder of The Feinstein Foundation, then divides his donation of $1 million proportionately among approximately 2,000 agencies participating in the challenge.  Each food item donated is valued at $1 per item.
