Introduction

"Hi, my name is....."

That is how kids often start things -- from their personal introductions, to the stories they write, to any presentations they make.  But I'm choosing to start in a different way.  I want to explain how I ended up in South Brunswick.

I attended Newark State College (the predecessor of Kean University) and as a student teacher in 1970-71 I participated in an innovative sixteen-week student teaching program at Crossroads.  (The typical program was eight weeks back then -- and middle schools were few and far between.)

I was hired in 1971, I taught at Constable and Greenbrook, and I was a part of the faculty that opened Brunswick Acres in 1975.  In close to 40 years of teaching, I have probably worked with 1000 or more South Brunswick kids -- most no longer kids, of course,  some of whom have returned to South Brunswick to live and raise their families.

I consider myself the 'loyal opposition.' Loyal, because I believe that being committed to people or places or ideas involves responsibility and continued connection; and opposition, because when things are happening that diminish rather than enhance those people or places or ideas, someone has to speak up about it.

It's likely that I'll be addressing any number of issues, questions and ideas.  Education, of course.  But also questions of values and motivations and inclinations.

I am happy I have the opportunity to write this blog! A couple of years ago, I was asked to contribute; but as often happens, our wonderful ideas didn't quite pan out.  Looking forward to it!
