Campers at the South Brunswick Family YMCA got a special treat on Wednesday when the 2012 Camplified tour stopped by for an afternoon concert.
The show featured 12-year-old recording artist and New Jersey native Karlee Roberts, who has performed with stars like the Disney Channel’s Trevor Jackson, YouTube sensation Payton Rae, and the NBC show America’s Got Talent's “The All Ways.”
"Camplified brings us three different acts and what's nice about Karlee Roberts is that she has a huge anti-bullying message," said YMCA Senior Program and Camp Director Joe Marciszyn. "She has a song called 'Call Me Whatever' that really gives kids a message that it doesn't matter what people say about you."
The Camplified Tour is in its 11th season and is set to stop at 38 summer camps, with more than 30,000 kids across the United States. The one-day music festivals are geared for campers in the tween age group.
Armed with “nerd glasses” and the catchphrase "get your geek on," Karlee told the YMCA campers to be proud of who they are and to help eliminate bullying.
“I’m so happy to hear how ‘Call Me Whatever’ inspired them to be proud of who they are and put a stop to bullying," Karlee said via release. "I want to thank my fans for helping spread anti-bullying awareness.”
The event is part of the YMCA's summer camp program, which provides a variety of different themes and events for kids throughout the summer.
"This really added something new. We've never had a concert here on our outdoor stage before," Marciszyn said. "The great thing about this show is that Karlee is only 12-years-old and provides an example to all the kids that they can aspire to be bigger than they are."
