A Summer of Giving at South Brunswick YMCA Camp

While most kids are spending the summer soaking in the sun or taking part in myriad activities, campers at the South Brunswick Family YMCA are using the break from school to lend a helping hand to those in need.

Each week, campers at the Y have chosen a different charity to help, raising hundreds of dollars in the process.

"Our teens and pre-teens want to have fun at camp, but they have a hard time if they don't want to play games or sports," said Camp Director Courtney Chin. "So I thought, why don't we let them do charity work where they pick the charities every week, make marketing materials and put on events."

Thus far, the Y camp has raised money through bake sales and car washes for the ASPCA and a South Brunswick resident suffering from stomach cancer. Their efforts have collected nearly $800 combined.

"This is something fun for them to do where they're not being told this is what you have to do today," Chin said. "The older kids want to make their own decisions, so this gives them freedom to control what's happening to them and gives them experience leading and taking charge. We're really proud of the work they're doing for the community."

With fundraisers upcoming for Toys for Tots and other groups, the counselors allow the kids autonomy to choose the charity and to help them execute the fundraiser. Ultimately, Chin said breaking away from the normal summer camp experience gives the kids memories that will last much longer.

"We hope they take away a sense of self-esteem from doing a good job helping people," she added. "You can see the smiles on the kids' faces. Giving back always gives a sense of joy."
