Vikings Face Sayreville in State Semi-Finals Tonight

Rematch from season opener, which saw the Vikings win 14-7 on Sept. 9.

The road to a state championship for the South Brunswick High School football team will pass by a familiar foe tonight, as the Vikings will face Sayreville for the second time this season. The Vikings edged the defending Central Jersey Group IV champion Bombers by a 

Last week in the first round of the playoffs, SBHS improved to over Hillsborough. starred for the Vikings, carrying the ball 9 times for 162 yards. He also caught a pass for 36 yards. Tyree scored on a 55-yard run on the first play from scrimmage, and then added touchdown runs of 17 yards and 5 yards in the second quarter.

Going into halftime against Hillsborough, SBHS led 21-14 at the break. before pulling away in the second half with a dominating performance on both sides of the ball.

The Vikings scored on every possession in the second half, starting with a 23-yard touchdown by Azim Blakey. TJ Perkowski added touchdowns on runs of 7 and 45 yards and Dontae Strickland scored on a 1-yard run. 

"If you're going to be a championship team, you have to make plays and put teams away," South Brunswick Coach Rick Mantz said after last week's win. "We did that tonight."

To make it to the finals will not be easy however, as Sayreville (8-3) will be looking to avenge their loss to South Brunswick in the season opener. Tyree starred in the victory over Sayreville, scoring on a 15-yard run with 2:37 left to play to give the Vikings a 7-point lead. On the ensuing drive, Tyree came away with an interception that sealed the 14-7 win for SBHS.

The victory gave the Vikings retribution for a 28-7 loss to Sayreville last season.

"Sayreville has always been a good team," said South Brunswick two-way tackle Bryan Stonkus earlier this year. "We knew what we were getting into."

Fifth-seed Sayreville advanced to the semi-finals with a 21-13 win over fourth-seed Jackson Memorial (6-2) last week.

On the other side of the bracket, number two seed West Windsor Plainsboro South (9-1) advanced with a 30-7 win over North Brunswick (5-4) last week. WW-P will face number three seed Manalapan (8-1), who triumphed over Brick (5-4) by a score of 28-21.

The winners of both games will go head to head at High Point Solutions Stadium (formerly known as Rutgers Stadium) on Dec. 2.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. tonight at , 750 Ridge Road in Monmouth Junction.
