Steelers Capture SBPAL Flag Football Junior Championship

Steelers defeat the Screaming Eagles 14 to 7 on Nov. 19.

The South Brunswick PAL Flag Football Junior Championship was played on Nov. 19, with the Steelers defeating the Screaming Eagles 14-7. The game was a defensive battle. 

In the first quarter, the Eagles stopped the Steelers on their first possession. The Steelers returned the favor when the Eagles had a first and goal and the Steelers stopped them on 4th down and a foot.

The next series the Steelers quarterback, Evan Sooby, went around his right tackle Chris Garber, his blocking full back Conor Quigley and his blocking wide receiver Connor Ferry to run 80 yards for the touchdown. The extra point was not successful, making the score 6-0.

In the second quarter, Jay Mehta of the Eagles scored running around the right side for 6 points. He also scored the extra point to make it a score of 7-6 at the half.

Both teams battled throughout the final two quarters and with just under 2 minutes left in the game, Steelers quarterback Evan Sooby, behind the blocking of Patrick Quigley, Kabir Khanna, and Arjun Kharti, passed to halfback Matt Bacchi, who ran down the left side of the field for a 25-yard reception with a 20-yard run for a touchdown. The 2-point conversation was also caught by Matt in the back of the end zone for a 14-7 lead.

The Eagles' Michael Bottega ran the ensuing kickoff back to the Steelers 40-yard line. With time running out and down to their last play, Eagles quarterback Ryan Maloney threw an interception to Conor Quigley, giving the win and the championship to the Steelers.

The South Brunswick PAL FLAG FOOTBALL league will be having the end of season pizza party on Thursday, Dec. 15 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Crossroads South Middle School.  As part of the party, there will be awards and trophies for the players.   

Family members are invited, as this should be a fun event to relax and spend some time with other parents, friends and players.
