South Brunswick Wrestling Unscored Upon in Quad Meet

Vikings to host state meet on Feb. 9.

It certainly didn't come as any surprise that the South Brunswick wrestling team swept a quad meet at home on Feb. 5. The scores, however, were what may have raised an eyebrow or two.

South Brunswick defeated New Brunswick, North Brunswick and Rutgers Prep by a combined score of 239-0.

'That's never really the goal," South Brunswick Coach Joe Dougherty said. "We've never done that before (blanked three teams in a quad meet). It was just circumstances. We wrestle these teams every year. We're just having a good year and they are having a down year."

Part of the reason for the scores were forfeits. Parth Patel (103) and Kevin Moses (285) were a perfect 3-0 on the day and never even wrestled a match. South Brunswick picked up 18 forfeits in the three matches.

In truth, the forfeits just stretched out the margins of victory a bit. In matches that were contended, South Brunswick was 24-0.

"Our guys really committed themselves to becoming better wrestlers in the off-season," Dougherty said. "We always tell them they need to do things in the off-season. We had kids that took that literally."

South Brunswick finished with an 83-0 win over New Brunswick. It defeated North Brunswick 75-0. It also had an 81-0 win over Rutgers Prep. Those wins left South Brunswick with a record of 17-3.

Against New Brunswick, Jordan Pagano (112), Steve Mastro (130), Matt Boratta (135), Constantine Rissiotis (140), Ryan Dorsay (145), James Pagano (152), Tyler Jaramillo (160) and Jake Pietrefesa (171) all won by pin. Parth Patel (103), Justin Lopez (112), Tommy Dorsay (125), Lucus Del Piano (189), Dallas Siegel (215) and Kevin Moses (285) won by forfeit.

"Our kids wrestled well," Dougherty noted.

Against North Brunswick, James Pagano (145), Constantine Rissiotis (140), Ali Yildiz (171), Lucas Del Piano (189), Chad Capraro (125) and David Dominguez (135) all won by pin. Justin Lopez (119), Tyler Jaramillo (152) and Jake Pietrefesa (160) won by decision. Parth Patel (103), Jordan Pagano (112), Tommy Dorsay (130), Dallas Siegel (215) and Kevin Moses (285) won by forfeit.

"All of our hard work is paying off," Dougherty said.

Against Rutgers Prep, the forfeits clinched a tie before any of the matches were held. Parth Patel (103), Justin Lopez (119), Steve Mastro (130), James Pagano (145), Tyler Jaramillo (152), Lucas Del Piano (189) and Kevin Moses (285) picked up the forfeits.

As in the other matches, the opponents didn't do much better when they faced off against a South Brunswick wrestler. Jordan Pagano (112) won by technical fall. Tommy Dorsay (125), David Dominguez (135), Constantine Rissiotis (140), Andre Jones (160) and Dallas Siegel (215) won by pin. Ali Yildiz (171) won by decision.

South Brunswick is scheduled to host a Central Jersey Group IV state tournament match on Feb. 9. It will wrestle the winner of Howell/Montgomery, scheduled for Monday.

"Never hosted this meet before," Dougherty noted. "It's pretty exciting. You have to be one of the top two seeds to host. We have enough power points. It's definitely a milestone. We just want to transfer that into a win."
