South Brunswick U16 Lady Vikings Win Annual Sid Lee Tournament

Lady Vikings go 5-0 to capture Sid Lee Memorial Softball Tournament at Reichler Park.

The Sid Lee Memorial Softball Tournament has been held each year for the past five years in South Brunswick to honor the late Sid Lee.

Lee helped to establish the girls Travel Programs for both softball and basketball. This weekend the U16 Tournament was held from Friday through Sunday at Reichler Park, and the South Brunswick Lady Vikings won the Championship.

The girls went undefeated for the entire weekend going 5-0. They started off Friday night by beating a very tough NJ Fury team 4-3, with a two-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning.

On Saturday, the girls kept on rolling with a 7-2 win over the Central Jersey Cyclones and an 8-3 victory over the Manalapan Belles.  They garnered the number two overall seed of 12 teams based on pool play and headed into Sunday in the Semi-Finals.

The Semi-Finals game pitted them against the always tough Hillsborough Hurricanes and the Lady Vikings prevailed in a close one 4-2.  The Final Championship game matched number one seed and perrennial powerhouse Pennsbury Gems of Pennsylvania vs. the Vikings.

Each team was undefeated on the weekend headed into the final contest. The Gems were tough as always, jumping out to a 4-0 lead after five innings, and seemed to be in control.

Then in the top of the 6th inning, the Vikings put together an 8-run rally as they sent 12 batters to the plate, while Pennsbury changed pitchers twice to no avail.

The girls then held on and shut out Pennsbury the rest of the way for the 8-4 victory and Tournament Championship.

The girls were led by strong pitching from Amanda Fisher, Autumn Sharkey and Kristen Miele. All of the catching was done by Callie Hamilton.

Great hitting and defense were provided by third Baseman Jenny Hamilton, first baseman Sydney Demkowicz, shortstops Allison Boni and Jenna Mastronardi, second baseman Christen Biondolillo, and outfielders Jess Quinones and Jenny Miller. Outfielder Jess Gural was injured and unable to play in the tournament.

Amanda Fisher led the team in hitting throughout the tournament.  Next week the girls finish their Summer Season in Linden at the USSSA Extreme Summer Heat Tournament.  The team is coached by Mike Hamilton with assistants Rich Fisher and Bea Miele.
