South Brunswick U-12 Gold wins Montgomery Tournament

Baseball squad reaches championship game in Monroe

With one trophy "in the mail" and another switched to a t-shirt, the South Brunswick U-12 Gold baseball team had a little extra incentive when it played the championship game of the Montgomery John Covino Invitational Tournament.

"We know we are going to get a trophy whether we win or lose," South Brunswick Coach Glen Marchese said.

Of course, Marchese and his boys were hoping it would be "for winning the tournament."

It was.

South Brunswick didn't leave much doubt in this one, beating Hillsborough in the title game, 12-2, on July 13.

Previously, South Brunswick won the Hopewell Tournament. It also placed second in Bridgewater.

This is a very busy team. It didn't have much time to celebrate either of its titles. Instead, South Brunswick jumped right back into action in more tournaments.

South Brunswick defeated Matawan, 6-2, in the semifinals of the Monroe Tournament. The team will play in the championship game on July 25 against South Wall.

The members of the South Brunswick team are Martin James, Arvind Swaminathan, Nick Caimi, Joshua Liao, Ernie Cleworth, Jalen Nock, Carey Liu, Matt Lange, Jack Marchese, Jake Rizick, Seth Weingarten and Kyle O'Leary.

The Coaches on the team are Marchese, Ernie Cleworth, Mark Lange and Michael James.

This group would like to thank the parents for their support and the commitment it took to play one tournament after another during the summer.

Fortunately, one of the tournaments is right at home in South Brunswick.

"We're currently 2-1 in our tournament with one game left in pool play," Manager Marchese said. "We lost our first game, but bounced back and played two outstanding games (Sunday) in a doubleheader."

South Brunswick defeated Hopewell, 14-3. It also defeated Monroe, 6-0.

Being this is its own tournament, South Brunswick not only can save money on gas, it knows there will a trophy waiting for it if it can reach the title game.
