South Brunswick Softball Slugs out Second win

Vikings 2-2 after rain-shortened schedule.

The South Brunswick High School girls softball team picked up its second win of the season in a slugfest on Apr. 8. South Brunswick scored in every inning but the second in a 16-11 win over Sayreville.

Sayreville threw a bit of a scare into SBHS by scoring five runs in the bottom of the seventh. Fortunately, South Brunswick had built a 10-run advantage by then.

"That game was played in the rain," South Brunswick Coach Danielle Matlack said. "It probably should have been called in the fifth or sixth inning. The field was playable at the start, but it went fast."

Montgomery scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. South Brunswick had taken a 2-0 lead in the top of the seventh on a two-run homer by Jen Resnick. The homer also scored Chelsea Lee.

"We had a runner on in the seventh with no outs and didn't execute," Matlack said. "They got a runner on, moved her over,  got her in and that was the difference. in the game.

"It was a good game. We felt better about that one than the win against Sayreville."

This was meant to be a tournament, including Bishop Ahr and Cranford. Because of the rain in the area, however, only one of Montgomery's two fields was available for play.

South Brunswick was also defeated, 6-1, by JP Stevens on Apr. 7.

Danielle Rybinski (RBI), Jen Resnick (run),  Melissa Mielko and Jill Blaine had hits for South Brunswick.

South Brunswick is scheduled to host Old Bridge on Apr. 15.

"We need to start playing more games," Matlack said. "You can only practice so much. We try and do different things to keep it fun. We have to play. If we don't, it's going to make it hard to be ready when it's time to play. You want to be sharp."
