South Brunswick Softball Readies for Tournaments

Coach worried about lack of recent activity.

Danielle Matlack likes her team's talent and schedule for the upcoming softball tournaments. The one thing the South Brunswick softball coach doesn't like is the lack of recent game activity.

As South Brunswick gets set to open the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament on May 22 against Carteret, it has played one game in the past nine days.

"That absolutely concerns me," Matlack said. "It's so wet, it's even hard to practice. The infield is all muddy. We're out practicing on the grass. You don't even get the same bounces.

"What are you going to do? Everyone is in the same boat. No one has been playing. You have to play."

South Brunswick takes an 11-8 record into the tournaments. It's only game in the past nine days was a 4-3 loss to Howell on May 16.

South Brunswick's most recent win was a 12-1 victory over Piscataway on May 12.

Rachel Vogel allowed only two hits and no earned runs while picking up the pitching win. Vogel also had two hits, two runs scored and three RBI.

South Brunswick had a lot of offense in this one, including two hits, two runs scored and two RBI by Sara Finnegan. Danielle Rybinski had two hits, a run scored and a RBI.

South Brunswick also was able to get a game in on May 11 and defeated Old Bridge, 6-1.

Jill Blaine did the pitching, allowing just three hits. Finnegan (two hits, run and RBI), Rybinski (two hits and run), Ally Mischke (three hits, run and two RBI) and Megan Grocholske (three hits and two runs) provided the offense.

South Brunswick also defeated Old Bridge, 13-5, on May 10.

Aaren Blair (two RBI), Jen Resnick (two runs) and Mischke (two runs and three RBI) had three hits each. Kelly Miller (RBI) and Finnegan (four runs) had two hits each.

South Brunswick is hoping to recapture some of that play in the tournaments. After playing Carteret in the GMC, South Brunswick will face Montgomery in the Central Jersey Group IV Tournament on May 24.

"How we play is all up to the girls," Matlack said. "They have the talent. We have already defeated Carteret (9-2 on May 9. Finnegan and Resnick both had three RBI). We played Montgomery tough (3-2 loss on Apr. 9) and we know we can beat them.

"It all comes down to the day. If they want to win, we'll win. Depends on the motivation."

Of course, some nice weather wouldn't hurt.
