South Brunswick Softball Eager for Another Shot at Edison

Vikings will take 5-4 mark into Saturday's game.

The South Brunswick High School softball team has played several good games this season. Coach Danielle Matlack would just like to see it happen every game.

According to Matlack, the level of play isn't always evident in the final score.

South Brunswick defeated Sayreville, 8-7, on Apr. 26. The following day, South Brunswick was edged by Edison, 2-1, in 10 innings.

"We had a good game against Edison," Matlack said. "The day before, we didn't play well and won. It's not always about whether you won or not."

Rachel Vogel pitched extremely well against Edison. The second run only scored because the 10th inning started with a runner on second base for both teams.

South Brunswick scored in the second when Jill Blaine singled and scored on a hit by Chelsea Lee.

"Edison is 16th in the state," Matlack noted. "We came out focused and ready to play them. We tend to play at the level of our competition."

Matlack believes that happened against Sayreville, which scored three runs in the seventh before South Brunswick could get the final out.

"It's really frustrating when you have a four-run lead in the last inning and you watch it go away slowly," Matlack noted.

Jen Resnick (run) and Kerry Miller both had a hit and two RBI. Ally Mischke scored two runs. Chelsey Lee had hit, RBI and two runs scored. Melissa Mielke and Megan Grocholske both had a hit and RBI.

This was the third win in a row for South Brunswick, which defeated Piscataway (19-1) and Rancocas Valley (5-3).

Against Rancocas Valley on Apr. 20, Jill Blaine pitched a complete game and earned the win. Grocholske, Mischke, Resnick and Blaine all had two hits.

"That was a good win," Matlack said. "They made a mistake to help us out, but the girls did a nice job."

Against Piscataway on Apr. 21, Vogel picked up the win. Miller had two hits, two runs scored and three RBI. Grocholske had three RBI. Lee had three hits and three runs scored. Vogel had two RBI. Sara Finnegan had two hits and four runs scored. Danielle Rybinski had four hits, two runs scored and three RBI.

"We took care of business in this one," Matlack said.

Now, at 5-4, South Brunswick will get to see if it can handle Edison at home on Saturday.

"The kids want it," Matlack said. "They want to get back at them."
