South Brunswick Program Makes Tennis a Family Affair

Parents and kids can take lessons simultaneously through South Brunswick Community Education program.

With the economic woes gripping the country, it can be difficult for families to find recreational opportunities during the winter and fall months that are easy on the wallet. But a low cost program offered through South Brunswick's Community Education program allows parents and kids to take tennis lessons at the same time, while strengthening their bond on the court.

"We noticed our (tennis program) was successful and the kids were enjoying themselves, but the parents were sitting around watching," said Community Education Director Sandra Fehte. "So we went to the parents and said let's go out on the court and hit some balls. That kind of evolved into a program where parents take lessons at the same time as their kids."

The program costs about $100 for a six-week program that runs on weekends.

"This is something that is not a huge time commitment and is relatively low cost, plus it's something families can do together," Fehte said. "Parents and kids take classes together and can learn a skill together.

"Parents have so little time to be able to do things for themselves and not feel guilty like they're taking away from family time. This gives them the opportunity to do something at the same time as their kids, and learn a new skill together."

The program is part of a wide array of offerings South Brunswick Community Education has available, from dancing and fashion to karate and computers.

"It's hard to find things families can do together, which leads to a stronger family life and that is important for student success," Fehte said. "As parents struggle to balance work, play, and family life, we feel that are providing a service to our families and hope to offer similar family opportunities in the future."
