South Brunswick Post 401 Starts 3-2-1

Legion team will host doubleheader on Saturday

Although the South Brunswick Post 401 American Legion had a tough job putting its team together, it is off to a 3-2-1 start.

"In order to fill out the roster, we picked up good players throughout the county," Manager Anthony Cosumano said.

The team picked up three players from Middlesex High School and three more from Monroe. It also picked up five players from St. Joes, two of which are South Brunswick residents. The remaining players are all from South Brunswick.

"Hopefully this year will go well," Cosumano said.

South Brunswick opened the season with an 11-7 loss to Bordentown on June 5. It also lost its most recent game  -- 5-4 to North Brunswick on June 15. The games in the middle worked out much better for South Brunswick, which won by forfeit over Iselin on June 6, 13-1 over North Brunswick on June 8, and 3-2 over Clara Barton on June 13. On June 10, South Brunswick tied Monroe, 5-5.

"Im happy with the record, but it could be better," Cosumano said. "We had some errors that hurt us in that tie game. We also should have won our last game."

South Brunswick had an early 4-1 lead against North Brunswick. Down 5-4 in the sixth, South Brunswick loaded the bases with no outs and didn't score.

Theodore Moke has made three starts for South Brunswick on the mound and has a 1-0 record and an ERA of 1.566 with 13 strikeouts in nine innings. Ryan Phillips has made the other two starts and has an ERA of 1.077.

The other pitchers are Jimmy Nemeth, Gabe Frankel and Robbie Fliegelman.

Fliegelman is off to a great start at the plate. He's 6-for-12 with three runs scored and three RBI. Factor in five walks and he has an on-base percentage of .647.

Dominick Forcella is 9-for-18 with six runs, four RBI and five steals.

Kevin Mayce is 6-for-17 (.353) with two doubles and four RBI.

Ray Lang is 8-for-20 with a double, triple, five runs scored and four RBI.

Ariel Torres is only 1-for-9, but his four walks have helped him to a .385 on-base percentage. Two hits, two hit by pitches and a walk has PJ Delacruz with a .500 on-base percentage.

The other members of the team are Mike Heyer, Harris Fleigelman, Ernie Forcella, Chris Winkleman, Chris Vianni and Michael Huber.

South Brunswick will be back in action when it hosts a doubleheader of sorts on Saturday. It is scheduled to play Falls Township at 11 a.m. At 2 p.m., the team will play Flemington.

South Brunswick has games scheduled through July 11. Included in that schedule are home games on June 20 against South Amboy and on June 21 against Clara Barton.

"When you try and put together a team with players from four different high schools, it takes a while for everyone to get used to each other," Cosumano said. "This should be a team that gets better as the season goes along."
