South Brunswick Places in Four Meet of Champions Events

Baker, Osley, Spriggs, DelPiano, Hall and Padovano win medals.

When it came time to compete against the best, the South Brunswick High School track team was at its best.

"At this time of the season, all you want to see is the kids doing their best," South Brunswick Coach Stefan Moorhead said. "If the kids weren't at their best, they were real close to it. You really can't ask for more than that."

Competing in The Meet of Champions this past Saturday at the Bennett Center in Toms River, South Brunswick placed in four events and had six individuals earn medals.

"We don't keep records on things like that, but that has to be up there as one of the best Meet of Champions performances in school history," Moorhead said.

It was highlighted by a third-place finish in the 4x400, the first time in school history South Brunswick has earned a medal in that event. Janae Baker, Joy Spriggs, Cayla DelPiano and Alicia Osley finished with a time of 4:00.34.

"That was a slight improvement on a season best," Moorhead said. "We were up with the leaders the whole race. The girls were even a little disappointed to finish third. We were proud of them."

DelPiano also earned a medal by placing fourth in the 1600 in a time of 5:03.24.

"That was was a personal best and less than a second from the school record," Moorhead said. "That's the second fastest 1600 in school history.

"Hopefully, this will give her confidence for the spring season that she can run with the best girls in the state."

Chloe Hall earned a medal by placing sixth in the shot put with a throw of 36' 9 1/2". Hall came into the event as the 24th seed.

"That was a big surprise," Moorhead said. "She threw well and came in front of a lot of girls seeded ahead of her."

Osley nearly added a medal in the 400. She ran a personal best of 58.45 and placed ninth.

"That was close to a school record," Moorhead said.

Lindsay Carbone competed in the pole vault, but did not make the opening height. The fact she was at The Meet of Champions, however, is quite an accomplishment.

Amber Brown was 13th in the shot put with a distance of 35' 9 1/2".

On the boys side, Dominick Padovano placed sixth -- and earned a medal -- on his last throw. That's when Padovano delivered a distance of 55' 1/2".

"He was really excited," Moorhead noted. "We were all excited. It was his final throw and he came through with a clutch performance. He's a senior, so to get a medal at The Meet of Champions was really nice."

Derek Forthun competed in the high jump and pole vault, but failed to reach either opening height.

"The opening heights for the pole vault (12' 6") and high jump (6' )  are both at or near his personal bests," Moorhead said.

Adam Dickert threw the shot 46' 5".

"To make it this far is great," Moorhead said. "He didn't even make it to the (Group IV) finals last year. I'm proud of all the kids that made it this far."
