South Brunswick Gymnastics Team Fourth in Invitational

Vikings edged in regular season meet.

The South Brunswick High School gymnastics team placed fourth while competing in the Raider Invitational, held this past Saturday at Hillsborough High School.

"There were seven ranked teams at this invitational," South Brunswick Coach Mindy Verderami said. "For South Brunswick to place fourth means a lot to show that we are back this season, ready to defend our program."

South Brunswick finished with 107.675 points. Lindsay Carbone scored 36.55 of those points while placing seventh in the all-around. Carbone was ninth on the bars (8.925), sixth on the beam (9.35) and 10th on the floor (9.225).

"At the Raider Invitational, we had a lot of girls receive qualifying scores on almost all events," Verderami said. "All five gymnasts who competed for us on beam and floor got a qualifying score. That says a lot about the depth we have this year."

South Brunswick was defeated in a regular season meet by Bishop Ahr, 107.55-106.7, on Sept. 13.

Sarah Capraro was third in the vault (9.025), third on the bars (8.625) and third on the floor (9.225).

Morgan Rybinski  was second in the vault (9.05) and third on the beam (9.175).

Lindsay Carbone  was first on the bars (8.9) and second on the beam (9.2).

"Overall, the team did a great job at their first meet of the season," Verderami said. "We had a lot of nerves going, but we were able to keep them in check for most of the meet. We lost by .85, and that has a lot to say about this team's character and expectations for the rest of the season."

South Brunswick is scheduled to be back in action on Sept. 20 when it hosts South Plainfield in a 4:30 p.m. start.

"The nerves are slowly getting out of our system,"Verderami said. "We have a way to go till GMCs in October, but I think we can do it."
