South Brunswick Girls Golf Wins Opener

Vikings 10th in difficult tournament.

Five days after its scheduled opener, the South Brunswick High girls got the golf regular season started.

Obviously, they were ready after the delay.

South Brunswick defeated a talented West Windsor South team, 201-206, at Bunker Hill on Apr. 6.

"Any time you can shoot around 200, that's pretty good," South Brunswick Coach Joe Dougherty said. "We shot a 201. I'm pretty happy."

Julia Bae (48) and Maggie Boyle (49) had the best rounds of the day. Katherine Chell (51) and Talia Togno (53) had the other rounds that counted for South Brunswick, which used six golfers and counted the best four scores. Naina Kamath (64) and Lauren Scannelli (62) also competed for South Brunswick.

"It was a good win," Dougherty said. "West Windsor South is a good team that pretty much has everyone back."

South Brunswick's scheduled opener on Apr. 1 against Robbinsville was rained out.

"It also rained a little bit in the match against West Windsor South, but then it got nice," Dougherty said. "You just have to deal with it. We've been out and practiced in that stuff (rain). There are going to be times you have to play in the rain and you have to be ready."

South Brunswick's first action of the season came on Apr. 4 when it competed in the Red Devil Invitational. South Brunswick placed 10th out of 30 teams.

"That's the best girls golf tournament in the state," Dougherty noted.

In this format, four girls played for each team and they shot 18 holes. Bae had a 103, Boyle and Chell 108s and Togno a 118.

The tournament was won by Montgomery. Red Bank Catholic placed third. Both of those teams will be in the same state sectional grouping with South Brunswick later in the season.

"If we had played a little more before this tournament, I think we definitely could have done better," Dougherty said. "It was good for the girls to see the quality of the teams that they will face in the sectionals. We know we'll have to shoot better if we want to advance on to the states."

South Brunswick is scheduled to golf at Bridgewater on Monday and Old Bridge on Wednesday.
