South Brunswick Girls Golf Reigns in the Rain

Vikings off to 5-0 start.

Despite the fact an umbrella has gotten more use than a putter, the South Brunswick High School girls golf team has managed to splash its way to a 5-0 start.

"It's been kind of a mess," South Brunswick Coach Joe Dougherty noted of the impact the rain has had on the golf courses.

Rain has not only made the course wet and filled up the traps, it's made cutting the grass at the courses almost impossible.

"There's really nothing the courses can do," Dougherty said. "The ground is so wet, the lawnmowers would get stuck."

According to Dougherty, it might even make sense to start practicing more at driving ranges. Because every time he sets his girls loose on a course, they are coming back covered in mud.

Well, mud and glory. The mud is much more acceptable when it comes with a win.

South Brunswick's most recent win was 159-174 over Notre Dame on Apr. 27. That match was stopped after seven holes because of rain.

Maggie Boyle shot a 37, Katherine Chell a 40, Victoria Lam a 41 and Talia Togno a 41.

On Apr. 25, South Brunswick defeated Robbinsville, 214-268.

Boyle shot a 50, Julia Bae a 52, Chell a 56 and Togno a 56.

"The weather has played havoc on the way we have performed," Dougherty said. "The golf courses are not taking the water well."

Earlier in the season, South Brunswick defeated Bridgewater-Raritan, 220-224, on Apr. 11.

Boyle shot a 52, Bae a 52, Chell a 55 and Togno a 61.

That match was played at Green Knoll, which has an eighth hole considered the toughest in New Jersey.

"I know when I played it, I didn't see the other coach the entire hole," Dougherty said. "He was off chasing his ball somewhere. I got a par on the hole."

On Apr. 13, South Brunswick defeated Old Bridge, 153-167. This was also limited to seven holes.

Boyle had a 34, Chell a 35, Bae a 40 and Togno a 44.

South Brunswick will play West Windsor South on Monday. On Tuesday, the team will take part in the Central Jersey Girls Golf League Championships. Weather permitting, of course.
