South Brunswick Girls Excel at Track Relays

Brown and Hall set meet record in discus.

Continuing where it left off in the winter, the South Brunswick High girls track team turned in a tremendous performance at the Greater Middlesex Conference Track Coaches Relays, held this past Saturday at South Plainfield.

"Overall, it was a positive season opener for us," South Brunswick Coach Stefan Moorhead said.

South Brunswick won six events, including all three of the throwing events.

"The throwers showed great early season form," Moorhead said. "We swept the javelin, discus and shot put in both the varsity and novice divisions. Breaking the meet record in the discus relay was definitely a nice accomplishment for Amber and Chloe."

The combination of Mariah Browne and Jen O'Laughlin won both the long jump and triple jump. Browne had a distance of 36' 5.25" in the triple jump and 16' 6.5" in the long jump. O'Laughlin had a distance of 32' 6.5" in the triple jump and 14' 11.5" in the long jump.

Alicia Osley, Janae Baker, Browne and Rachel Johnson won the 4x100 in a time of 49.42.

"The 4x100 team was the highlight, as their time was very strong despite the cool temperatures and a couple of shaky handoffs," Moorhead said.

The shuttle hurdle team of Jen O'Laughlin, Monet Hall, Rachel Johnson and Janae Baker was second in a time of 1:11.76.

The 4x200 team of Johnson, Jackie Marciniak, Hall and Victoria Monteiro was fifth in a time of 1:54.91.

The 4x400 team of Joy Spriggs, Browne, Jenna Thompson and O'Laughlin was third in a time of 4:22.51.

The 4x800 team of Spriggs, Baker, Lindsay Del Piano and Osley was third in a time of 10:32.89.

The 4x1600 team of Charlotte Thomas, Nicky Mateesru, Malanie Huen and Carly Trill was fourth in a time of 24:23.59.

The sprint medley team of Monet Hall, Taiyana Madden, Stephanie Vetter and Melanie Huen was fifth in a time of 4:51.66.

The distance medley team of Emily Lane, Taiyana Madden, Emily Giarratano and Jenna Boyle placed sixth in a time of 14:19.36.

"On the track, we mixed up some lineups and put some of our better athletes in events they don't usually run," Moorhead said. "We were also able to get a lot of our younger athletes into the meet so they were able to gain some valuable experience."

Proving that it also has a great deal of depth on the way in the future, South Brunswick also dominated the action in the novice events.

Danielle Padovano, already an established thrower, won the novice shot (32' 5.5") and the discus (105' 2"). Alyssa McFarlane was second (31' 11"), Nateya Harris third (28' 4.75") and Kayla Nelson fourth (24' 9") in the shot. McFarlane was second (78' 8"), Adwoa Darwa-Anto fourth (72' 11") and Harris sixth (66' 6") in the discus.

Rachel Vandemark was first (89' 11) and Chloe Hall second (83' 7") in the novice javelin.

Lindsay Carbone won the novice long jump (13' 11.5") and triple jump (32' 5"). Julia Lekht was second in the long jump (13' 9.5) and triple jump (29' 6.25").

Jessica Himmel won the novice high jump (4' 4"). Himmel, Lekht, Nina Paranjpe and Khadia McDonald placed second in the novice 4x100 (56.53).
