South Brunswick Girls Basketball Adds Two More Wins to Great Season

Vikings now 10-5.

With a pair of wins this past week, the South Brunswick High School girls basketball team moved into double digits in the victory column.

South Brunswick is 10-5 this year. This comes after a 2009-10 season in which South Brunswick was 13-12.

"The girls are definitely doing a good job," South Brunswick Coach Beth Barrio said. "Even with all the injuries (and weather cancellations), they are maintaining their consistency. They are working through everything that is thrown at them. Hopefully, all of this will pay off when it is one-and-done time."

South Brunswick had trouble stopping Jasmine Jackson, but it still managed a 64-60 win over Old Bridge on Jan. 29.

Jackson finished with 35 points. Yasmine Tawfick (14 points) and Klaudia Korley (11 poins) also scored in double figures. No one else from Old Bridge scored in the game, though.

South Brunswick was outscored in the first (17-14) and third (14-12) quarters. The two teams played to an 18-18 tie in the fourth quarter. South Brunswick dominated the second quarter 20-11, which proved to be the difference in the game.

"Old Bridge was rallying back, but the girls maintained their composure at the end," Barrio said.

Danielle Roberts connected on six three-pointers and finished with 22 points for South Brunswick. Danielle Padovano (14 points), Bianca Celi (nine points) and Kelly O'Brien (eight points) also had good offensive games for South Brunswick.

South Brunswick built an early advantage and then held on for a 51-48 win over Perth Amboy on Feb. 3.

South Brunswick led 10-9 after a quarter and 26-13 after the half. Perth Amboy cut into the deficit with a 20-12 third quarter, but South Brunswick had enough to hold on for the win.

"We were up sixteen points at one point and then Perth Amboy got hot," Barrio noted. "The defense broke down a little bit, but we made the plays we really had to make. (Perth Amboy) never tied or went ahead."

Ashley DeGroff scored 19 points and Danielle Padovano added 18 points for South Brunswick in the win.

Because of several games called off by the weather, South Brunswick is scheduled to play East Brunswick on Monday, Edison on Wednesday and Spotswood on Thursday.

"I'm definitely happy with the record," Barrio said. "The one bothersome thing is the losses were big losses. We seem to be taking care of those teams that should. Even though it's only (five) losses, those were significant within the division. We'd like to make up for some of those losses when we get a second chance."

South Brunswick lost to Edison. It has lost twice to both Woodbridge and Piscataway.

The second loss to Woodbridge was 54-51 on Feb. 5 in overtime.

South Brunswick overcame an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter to force overtime. Ashley DeGroff put the game into overtime with a late three-pointer. DeGroff scored 11 points in the game. Bianca Celi recorded 16 points, four steals and four assists.
