South Brunswick Fundraiser to Aid Severely Injured Monroe Hockey Player

Monroe High School senior Michael Nichols suffered a broken neck during a game on Jan. 4.

While they may stand on opposite sides of the ice, the South Brunswick High School hockey team will stand united with Monroe High School in support of one of their brethren on Wednesday.

SBHS will host Monroe at ProSkate tomorrow afternoon, with the game also serving as a fundraiser for Monroe senior Michael Nichols, who suffered a fracture to his C-5 vertebrae during a game against Vernon on Jan. 4. Nichols' neck was injured following a head-on collision with the boards during the game.

Nichols was airlifted to the hospital where he underwent successful emergency neck surgery. Hospital officials said it's too soon to tell whether Nichols' long term prognosis will include being able to walk again, according to The Star Ledger.

"As everyone knows Mike is as tough as they come," Nichols' parents wrote Monday on a Facebook page dedicated to his recovery. "Mike rested well last night. There are no significant changes to his condition today. We believe that everyone's prayers are having an impact on Mikey's recovery. We ask that you all continue with your good wishes and prayers.

SBHS will collect donations for the Nichols family during the home game Wednesday at ProSkate, located at 1000 Cornwall Road in Monmouth Junction at 4:15 p.m.
