South Brunswick Football Heads Home 7-0

Vikings defeat JP Stevens, 35-0, to clinch GMC Red Division and continue its school-record streak.

Having completed its road schedule on Friday night, the South Brunswick
High School football team is heading home for what it hopes will be a long--and very successful--run.

South Brunswick finished a perfect 4-0 in road games. The fourth win was
35-0 over JP Stevens on Oct. 28.

"It's been an amazing season so far," noted Jake Pietrefesa, a senior that starts at left defensive end. "It's been wonderful. Everything has gone as planned."

As usual, South Brunswick used a steady running game to provide most of its offense. South Brunswick picked up a total of 236 yards on 42 carries.

Dion Hooper and Darrell Harper both scored two touchdowns. Harper scored
the first touchdown on a run of 6 yards. Harper also scored the last touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 6-yard run. Hooper scored on a 15-yard run in the second quarter and a 38-yard run in the third quarter. Dave Flanders scored the other touchdown on a 10-yard run in the first quarter.

Hooper finished with 59 yards on four carries. Harper (7-33), TJ Perkowski
(4-32), Dahrae Ford (6-29), Dan Gorzynski (4-25), Brian Lee (3-20), David
Flanders (6-16), Azim Blakey (6-11), Dante Strickland (1-6) and Andrew Lee (1-5) also ran for positive yardage.

South Brunswick added 78 yards passing. Dan Gorzynski completed four of
seven passes for 70 yards. TJ Perkowski completed one of two attempts for 8 yards. TJ Taylor had four receptions for 76 yards.

"We're a balnced team," Jake Pietrefesa noted. "We all work hard. We all work together. This is a real team. We have a lot of key players.

"This is really exciting. We've never been 7-0 before."

While the offense was controlling the ball and putting up points, the
defense also put up another excellent game. South Brunswick limited JP Stevens to a total of just 145 yards.

Isnard Merced and Alex Bercuta both had five tackles, including a sack
each. Joe Pietrefesa had 4.5 tackles, including a sack. Dion Hooper (4), Jake Pietrefesa (3), Azim Blakey (2), TJ Taylor (2), Darrell Harper, Trey Taylor, Chris Molnar, Tre Tisdale, Bob Spilatore, Jesse Tainow and Rashaan Baker also had tackles.

"Me and my brother play defensive end and have the outside blocked up," Jake Pietrefesa noted. "If teams try and go up the middle, we're solid there. We also have really fast safeties and linebackers. No one can outrun our corners. We have the defense locked down."

South Brunswick will host East Brunswick on Nov. 4 in a pretty meaningful
game. South Brunswick will be trying to keep its perfect season going, add to its power points and also avenge one of its three losses from 2010.

Earlier this season, South Brunswick avenged 2010 losses to Sayreville and
Piscataway. Although it is struggling this season, East Brunswick did defeat
South Brunswick, 24-12, last year.

The East Brunswick game will be South Brunswick's last chance to add to its
power point total. Going into action this weekend's games, South Brunswick was second in the power point standings to West Windsor South. West Windsor South had 124 points to South Brunswick's 119. West Windsor South, however, had played one more game.

South Brunswick should be hosting a playoff game the weekend of Nov
11-12. South Brunswick could also be home the following weekend for a playoff game. The Vikings will definitely be home to host North Brunswick on Thanksgiving. The Central Jersey Group IV title game will be held at Rutgers University.

"It been a great year, but, obviously, it can get better," Jake Pietrefesa noted. "We won the GMC Red Division on Friday night, but we're trying to go 12-0. We're heading home for a while. We all hope our next away game will be at Rutgers University (for the Central Jersey Group IV championship)."
