South Brunswick Boys Tennis Sweeps Way to Title

Vikings win all the crowns in GMC.

Considering South Brunswick was the two-time defending champion, it came as no surprise that the Viking boys won the Greater Middlesex Conference tennis championship again.

"All five flights advanced to the finals and clinched the team title after Friday's semi-finals," South Brunswick Coach Nancy McDonald noted.

Actually, still not a surprise. South Brunswick did the same thing last year.

"On Saturday, all five positions swept in the finals, awarding South Brunswick five individual champions," McDonald noted.

Okay, that's pretty good even for a very talented South Brunswick squad. And to top it all off, South Brunswick didn't even lose a set in the finals, held at Thomas Edison Park.

Dylan Karchere-Sun defeated Sayreville's Matt Musyoka, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2, to win at first singles.

Nikhil Roy defeated JP Stevens Neil Nadpara, 6-1, 6-2,  to win at second singles.

Rohan Bhatia defeated East Brunswick's Alex Nastase, 6-0, 6-0, to win at third singles.

Alberto Tenias-Nieli and Jag Buddhavarapu defeated their opponents from JP Stevens, 6-1, 6-1, at first doubles.

Dan Shapiro and Arun Chockalingham won 6-0, 6-0 in their championship match at second doubles.

South Brunswick's total of 20 points was more than the second (JP Stevens with 10 points) and third (Sayreville with 8 points) place teams combined.

"The team played outstanding all tournament, winning the team title and, unexpectedly, winning all the championship matches," McDonald said. "This makes three  years in a row this team has won GMC team tournament. I am extremely proud of their accomplishments."

South Brunswick will now wait for the seeds to see how it will go after a title in the Central Jersey Group IV field.
