South Brunswick Boys Soccer Continues Strong Play

Vikings six-game unbeaten streak snapped.

Although his squad had its six-game undefeated streak snapped, South Brunswick Coach Chris Hayston still had a lot to be thankful for with his boys soccer team.

For starters, the team did have a six-game unbeaten streak.

"To be 5-2-1, we have a lot to be happy about," Hayston said.

The fifth game of the streak came on Sept. 20 when South Brunswick played North Brunswick to a 1-1 tie.

Kyle Goodwin, assisted by Tommy Dorsay, scored for South Brunswick. Jimmy Quilter made nine saves in goal to allow South Brunswick to come away with the tie.

On Sept. 22, South Brunswick defeated Piscataway, 2-0. This could have been a very one-sided game, but Piscataway goalie Evan Manno made 17 saves in goal.

Andrew Atalla and Tommy Dorsay scored goals. Kyle Goodwin and Gabe Nunez had assists. Jimmy Quilter made nine saves in goal.

South Brunswick's unbeaten streak was stopped on Sept. 24 in a 3-0 loss to East Brunswick.

"We had one of those weeks where we weren't playing our best," Hayston said. "When you have a week like that, you just can't go 0-3. To have a week like that and go 1-1-1 in the Red Division is not the worse result in the world."

According to Hayston, the effort was there last week. The effort has been there all season.

"We just have to move the ball more efficiently," Hayston said. "We fell into the trap of getting the ball to one or two guys and everyone else watching them. Any team will be better when all eleven guys are involved."

Hayston considers it a lesson learned without much of a price to be paid.

"It's a learning experience and a real positive to still get a good result when you're not at your best," Hayston said.

A 1-1-1 week is not bad. A 5-2-1 record is excellent.
