South Brunswick Baseball is Inexperienced but Talented

Team will host Sayreville in opener April 1.

Just because the South Brunswick High School baseball team is inexperienced, that doesn't mean they can't get the job done on the field.

"This year's team is a relatively inexperienced team with a lot of potential," South Brunswick Coach Tim Sweeney said.

The returning players include senior Matt Amato (INF), Mike Bauer (OF), Craig Cleffi (OF), Zach Gildenberg (P/INF), Mike Katcher (P), Ariel Torres (INF) and Jon Yurecko (OF). The juniors back for another season are Nick Muha (C/OF) and Jack Young (1B).

"The team graduated seven seniors last season and only have three returning starters," Sweeney said.

The team last year had a record of 16-11 and was second in the Red Division. The real highlight of the season, however, was South Brunswick winning the Greater Middlesex Conference championship.

If South Brunswick is going to match -- or surpass -- last year's success, it's going to need several young players to step up and have great seasons. Well, at least several to step up and have good seasons.

"There are many younger players eager for their opportunity to showcase their talents and become a force on this year's team," Sweeney said.

New players that should help out include juniors Alex Carroll (P), Dan Levin (C), Luke Rimmer (INF), Sean Rogers (INF) and Ryan Savage (P). Sophomores new to the team are Sean Keenan (INF/C/P) and TJ Perkowski (OF/P).

According to Sweeney, this group could surprise some people.

"There are athletes on this team who have waited for their chance and will definitely take advantage of their opportunity," Sweeney said.

Of course, there are some clear advantages to having younger players out to prove their worth.

"The players worked harder than ever in the off-season to become a bigger and stronger team," Sweeney said.

The players are working to get ready for the season opener at home against Sayreville on Apr. 1. The following day, South Brunswick will play at Sayreville.

"This team will consist of a group of players willing to do whatever it takes to reach our goals," Sweeney said. "They are very hard workers who are willing to sacrifice their time and give their best effort to have a successful season."
