South Brunswick Baseball Continues Great Run

Vikings now 13-5.

The South Brunswick High baseball team's winning streak may have been stopped last week, but Tim Sweeney believes his players can start up another one.

"The goal all season was to be playing our best baseball when the tournaments were starting," said Sweeney, South Brunswick's coach. "We are doing that."

South Brunswick has won nine of its 10 past games to improve to 13-5 on the season.

St. Joes stopped South Brunswick's win streak the following day with a 6-4 win in extra innings.

Rather than get down about the loss, South Brunswick regrouped and won its next two games.

"They are all playing well," Sweeney noted. "The young guys got the experience and are playing with more confidence. The pitchers are throwing a lot more strikes. Everyone is hitting. We're playing well."

On May 7, South Brunswick outslugged Lawrenceville, 17-10.

Sean Keenan had four RBI, Jack Young five RBI and Yurecko two RBI.

"Throughout the lineup, the guys are hitting the ball," Sweeney said. "It's not one guy. It's everyone. If someone is not doing it, someone else picks him up. We're getting a lot of two-out RBI. That is one of the stats we like to keep."

South Brunswick didn't need a lot of two-out RBI on May 10 because it blanked Carteret, 7-0.

Mike Katcher pitched five scoreless innings to earn the win.

"He threw well," Sweeney said. "He didn't walk anyone and only allowed four hits. He could have pitched longer, but we just wanted to get some other guys some work."

South Brunswick will need all of its pitchers ready as it heads into a busy weekend. It plays Old Bridge on May 12 and 13. On Saturday, South Brunswick will begin play in the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament.
