South Brunswick 8U Softball Wins First Place in Tournament

Squad wins Woodbridge Summertime Sizzle Tournament.

On Sunday, July 15, the 8U South Brunswick Viking Softball team achieved something pretty remarkable.  After two losing seasons (a 2011 record of 1-20), they beat Warren 11-8 to earn a first place trophy in the Woodbridge Summertime Sizzle Tournament.

This 8U team is extra-special as it is not an “exclusive” travel squad.  There were only two requirements needed to make the team:

1)    Each girl had to LOVE softball.  Really, really, really LOVE it. (A LOT)

2)    Each girl had to have parents crazy enough to support them by sacrificing weekends through summer even on holidays and sit in the sweltering heat through practices and tournaments to cheer for this special little team!

It was simple: everyone who wanted to play made the team!

And while last year the team experienced mostly growing pains, their hard work and dedication finally brought them the “thrill of victory.”  Everyone on the team contributed, everyone made important plays in the field, and EVERYONE got hits.  It was a true team effort.

Thank you to the girls (Nikki, Quincy, Christina, and Hanna) and Coach Poach (John Rappoccio).  Their work on the side, at the bases, and in the dugout was critical.  And a very special “thank you” is given to Head Coach Dave Lombardo. Without his guidance, instruction, patience, and, at times, tough love, this remarkable win would not have been possible.

Congratulations Girls!
