South Brunswick 12U Vikings win Spring Training Tournament

Vikings capture title with shutout win over North Edison.

The 12U South Brunswick Vikings team and parents this year have been working extremely hard to raise money to go to Cooperstown, N.Y. in July.

One of the fundraising events was hosting the 2013 South Brunswick Spring Training Tournament, right here at Rowland Park in South Brunswick. The tournament ran from April 5-7 and was for any 12U team looking to participate.

The teams that signed up were CYA Gators from Philadelphia, In the Zone from Flanders, North Edison, Readington, Monroe and the South Brunswick Vikings.

The weather was a bit cold on the first night, but it turned out to be a beautiful weekend for baseball on the turf fields. The Vikings started off tying Monroe 4-4 on Friday night, where it was a great pitchers duel for both teams.

On Saturday, the Vikings faced the Readington Reapers, winning 16-0. They followed that against a well coached In the Zone team on Sunday, winning 4-3 in the semi-finals.

The Vikings' final game for the championship was against the undefeated North Edison squad. The boys got on North Edison quickly in the first inning and didn't let up at all, beating them 10-0 and winning the 2013 South Brunswick Spring Training Tournament.

"For a group of 12-year-old athletes to play as hard as they did against some great competition shows they are true champions. The boys are having a blast already this season and there is a great camaraderie and cohesiveness across the team," Manager Andrew Goldsmith said. "This was a true all-out effort by all 12 of the boys."
