South Brunswick 12U Vikings Win District 9 Championship

Vikings score 49 runs while giving up 11 runs throughout the championship to regain district title.

The South Brunswick Black 12U baseball team on Saturday won the 2013 Cal Ripken District 9 Championship shutting out the North Brunswick Raiders by a score of 3-0.

The win brings the Vikings to their next goal, which is to participate in the 2013 Cal Ripken State Championship, to be held in Montville starting July 11. This achievement comes on the heels of having won all four pool games versus Monroe (5-2), Edison (13-3), North Brunswick Gold (16-0), and South Plainfield (10-6), before again downing Edison (2-0) in the semi-finals.

The Vikings scored a combined total of 49 runs and only let up 11 runs throughout the championship, along with three shutouts.

"The entire defense for the Vikings showed great composure throughout the tournament," said manager Andrew Goldsmith.

The Vikings also had a solid hitting performance during pool play.

The Vikings played the championship versus the North Brunswick Raiders, who came off a win against the East Brunswick Bears in a playoff game the night before.

The Vikings got on the scoreboard early by putting one run up quickly in the first inning and never looked back. They continued to have a solid pitching performance with a six inning shutout.

"For a group of 12-year-old athletes to play as hard as they did against some great competition shows they are true champions," Goldsmith said. "The boys are having a blast there is a great camaraderie and cohesiveness across the team.

"This was a true all-out effort by all 12 of the boys and they are true champions."

The Vikings will be on their way once again to the state championships the week of the July 11 and will be representing South Brunswick the week of the July 20 in Cooperstown, NY where they will be competing with over 100 other teams.
