SBHS Softball Splits Spring Classic

Lady Vikings improve to 9-5 on the year.

South Brunswick High School came out strong in the opener of the first Viking Spring Classic-Strikeout Breast Cancer event on Saturday.

Sara Finnegan, Brianna Crossen, and Melissa Mielko did most of the damage for SBHS, as the Vikings slammed Hamilton by a final score of 12-2.

Finnegan went 3-for-4, with two doubles and two RBIs, while Mielko was 2-for-3 with a double, triple, and three RBIs. Crossen collected two hits and two RBIs.

Julie Foeldes also added two runs scored for South Brunswick.

Leann Panconi and Ashley Shor combined to limit Hamilton (2-12)to two runs on four hits over six innings, with each hurler giving up one run.

The Vikings (9-5) then moved to the finals of the Classic, where they would lose a tight contest to a tough J.P. Stevens squad in the championship game of the inaugural event by a score of 4-3.

SBHS fell behind 4-0, before scoring three runs in the fourth inning to nearly even the score with J.P. Stevens (11-1).

Finnegan doubled before being knocked in from an RBI single by Panconi, followed by a single by Shor.

Panconi would go the distance for the Vikings, giving up nine hits in seven innings, with four earned runs, three walks and a strikeout.
