Former SBHS Football Star Accuses Rutgers Defensive Coordinator of Bullying

The accusation comes seven months after the Mike Rice scandal.

For the second time this year, a coach at Rutgers University is under fire for verbal abuse.

This time, it's Defensive Coordinator Dave Cohen, according to nj.com. Cohen has been accused by former defensive back and South Brunswick High School star Jevon Tyree.

Tyree and his parents have accused Cohen of getting in Tyree's face during a study hall session in the spring, and using profane language and threatening to headbutt him, according to the report.

Tyree and his parents sought disciplinary action against Cohen, according to the report.

On Friday night, the Athletic Department said the situation was dealt with immediately.

"Cohen apologized the following day for his participation in the escalation of banter, which resulted in the use of inappropriate language," University officials said in a prepared statement. "Kyle Flood reprimanded Cohen and addressed the situation immediately with the entire coaching staff.

"This was an isolated incident. At no time was there any threat of physical violence, which was verified by an academic counselor, who was present in the room."

The event allegedly took place in April, shortly after former basketball coach Mike Rice was fired after a video surfaced in which Rice was seen yelling offensive language and shoving and kicking players during basketball practice.

Former Athletic Director Tim Pernetti resigned shortly thereafter, and Julie Hermann had taken over the position when she was contacted by Tyree's parents six months after the incident, according to the University.

"Since the situation occurred prior to Hermann’s arrival, she immediately contacted Flood, who apprised her of the situation and how it was addressed," officials said in the statement.

"To be sure, Flood initiated an additional meeting with Tyree and his parents to address their concerns and his future with the team. The following morning, September 17, Tyree informed Flood of his intention to remain with the program.

"Hermann spoke to Tyree’s father following the meeting with Flood and confirmed that the matter was resolved to his satisfaction."

Tyree left the team voluntarily on Nov. 6, according to the University.

At SBHS, Tyree was called “one of the top stars in Central Jersey,” by MaxPreps.com’s Tom Lemming, who labeled him active, tough and aggressive in his scouting report on Tyree.

The Scarlet Knights play at home on Saturday. They host Cincinnati at noon in a game that will be televised by ESPNews.
